The 96th Academy Awards ceremony was so locked in and nearly pre-determined that we, and many other outlets like ours, didn’t bother with an annual Snubs and Surprises feature—90% of the winners were that expected. But the Oscars always manage to throw in at least one curveball, and that was the Best Actress race. Many viewers, especially on social media, were stunned when Lily Gladstone, the main favorite to win the Best Actress prize for her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of The Flower Moon,” lost to Emma Stone for her performance in “Poor Things.” Even Stone seemed visibly shocked and taken aback by the win, using her speech to praise other nominees, specifically Gladstone (her genuinely surprised reaction has now become something of a meme on Twitter, too).
