When it’s graceful and methodical, it can have the dreamy qualities of “Delicatessen” or “Amelie.” But when the trick doesn’t work, it can be mighty exhausting to follow along with, as with his new Netflix film “Bigbug.” This movie has Jeunet doing “The Jetsons” while ruminating on what a robot uprising might inevitably look like, but that proves to be less exciting than one could ever imagine.

It’s the time of year again. That season when The Playlist breaks down all the arresting, disquieting breakthrough performances of the year that made you stand up and notice an actor — someone you couldn’t take your eyes off of.

Some of the these actors will be new to you and some aren’t new at all, but they have delivered a performance that’s head turning, reminds you who they are and in some cases is like you’re seeing them all over again for the very first time.

There’s an incredibly deep and rich humanity in Philippe Claudel’s directorial debut, “I’ve Loved You So Long.”

A soulful and extremely moving portrait of the seemingly limitless, and incontestable bonds of sibling love, the ugliness of family dark secrets and the hope of personal rebirth, ‘Loved You So Long’ is anchored by the devastating performance of Kristin Scott Thomas. It’s a turn so magnificent and affecting, its one of those rare non-English language roles that transcends its foreign ghetto (like Marion Cotillard’s “La Vie En Rose,” generally a unusual feat).
