Instead of his next directorial gig being his “final” feature film, Tarantino could be stepping behind the camera to helm some episodes of “Justified.”

According to Deadline, Quentin Tarantino is in talks to direct one or two episodes of the upcoming revival series, “Justified: City Primeval.” After all of this time, why would Tarantino decide this was the TV project to work on?

Sure, the series lasted 6 seasons and was pretty damn popular during its run, but with streaming and TV changing so much over the past decade, “Justified” is the type of show that would have developed a rabid following. And maybe that’s why FX is hoping to recapture that show’s former glory with another series based on an Elmore Leonard novel that may feature Timothy Olyphant reprising his role.

He’s even an accomplished screenwriter, with scripts for “Savages” and an upcoming Michael Mann film under his belt. But even someone at the stature of Winslow respects and adores the work of writer Elmore Leonard, the author behind books-turned-into-films such as “Out of Sight,” “Get Shorty,” and the TV series “Justified.” And according to Winslow, these two crime story legends almost worked together on a feature film.

Updated: Deadline says William H. Macy is now committed to star in the film. Macy stars in “Dirty Girl” which was just bought by The Weinstein Company yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Original story as follows…

Film adaptations of Elmore Leonard’s works run the gamut from the sublime (“Out of Sight”) to the tedious (2003’s “The Big Bounce”) covering all points in between (“Jackie Brown,” “Get Shorty,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Be Cool” among others), not to mention the TV shows that have been adapted from or inspired by his material, notably this year’s FX Timothy Olyphant-starrer “Justified.” So when news arrives of yet another Leonard adaptation, it’s hard to know whether to get excited or just to expect another outing for some B-listers wearing snazzy duds and cracking wise.

Depending on who you ask, “Jackie Brown” is either Quentin Tarantino’s best film to date or his least personal work (it’s the only book adaptation he’s ever done). Regardless, while it is excellent, and was a modest success, we figured it was only a matter of time before a followup of some kind was on the way.

Well, it is but it won’t have Quentin Tarantino’s hand behind the camera. Based on Elmore Leonard’s novel, “The Switch” is a prequel which chronicles the beginnings of the relationship between Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, played by Samuel L.

Many people, this writer included, consider Elmore Leonard one of the greatest living novelists in the English language. While his pulp origins (he started off writing Western short stories in 1951) mean he’s often underrated, very few authors have such command of their prose, plotting and characterization. The writer hasn’t always been well-served by Hollywood however; for every “Out of Sight” or “Jackie Brown,” which undeniably rank among the stone-cold classics of the crime genre, there’s been a “The Big Bounce” or a “Be Cool,” which must rank among the worst.

Though nearly ever filmmaker has a laundry list of movies-that-never-happened under their belt, it’s Quentin Tarantino who seems to spend as much time (who are we kidding, more time) discussing and building up a list of movies-that-will-never-happen as he does actually making movies.

Last week, while discussing the “Kill Bill” sequels-that-may-never happen, Variety decided to make a list of some of the abandoned Tarantino babies. While the article briefly touches on various aspects of the laundry list of forgotten projects, we’ve made a more complete rundown of some of the Tarantino films that never were (and will probably never be):

“Double V Vega” aka “Vega Brothers” — The long-in-gestation prequel to both “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction,” would have followed the exploits of Vic (Michael Madsen) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) during the latter’s time in Amsterdam.

Curious about the long-delayed, long-finished Elmore Leonard adaptation “Killshot”? The formerly mid-profile suspense thriller, starring the likes of Tom Jane, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rosario Dawson, has languished on the shelf for the Weinstein Company for almost two years now. A release date of January 24th was finally announced months ago, but we never really found out exactly how wide it was going to go.

The NYTimes claims the five theater release in Phoenix is, in the words of a Weinstein Company employee, “a test.” Likely the “test” is to figure out how much they should promote the likely-soon DVD release for a film that really has no business being such a turkey.
