In the on-going blitz of Netflix Originals we’ve been experiencing so far in 2016, Joe Swanberg’s “Easy” feels like a homing missile that has all the explosive resonance of a beach ball. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Filled with familiar faces, compartmentalized into bite-sized 30-minute shorts, and produced, directed, and written by the master and commander of mumblecore, “Easy” takes a light-hearted and accessible approach (no, really) to portray mid-life modern romance in Chicago, with the hopes of digging up some pretty heavy-duty stuff underneath terrifyingly ordinary lives.

And while he’s not quite Steven Spielberg, Swanberg’s career has certainly ascended, and sees him able to gather an increasingly impressive array of well known stars for his projects. And for his upcoming anthology series “Easy,” set to be unveiled on Netflix, he’s gathered his most extensive ensemble yet.

Almost nothing worked this summer, but the most reliable genre was perhaps horror. While blockbusters left and right were flopping, low-budget chillers like “Don’t Breathe” and “Lights Out” were kicking ass, and even “The Conjuring 2” defied the trend of sequels underperforming and did blockbuster business (albeit slightly down on its predecessor).

Which should give some confidence to the makers of upcoming horror sequel/prequel thing “Ouija: Origin Of Evil.” 2014’s “Ouija,” based on the popular sleepover favorite board, wasn’t a huge blockbuster, but it did take $100 million worldwide off a $5 million budget, which must have made producers Michael Bay and Jason Blum very happy.

It might be a particularly dumb piece of material to base a movie on — the Hasbro-trademarked board with which you ‘contact the dead’ — and it might have been a very bad movie, but 2014’s horror pic ‘Ouija” was undeniably a hit, taking $100 million worldwide on a budget of just $5 million. So it’s not surprising that a sequel is now on its way. Or more accurately, a prequel.
