Directed by renaissance man Robert Schwartzman, having helmed such efforts as “Dreamland,” “The Unicorn,” and “The Argument” in addition to fronting indie group Rooney and appearing onscreen as the dreamboat love interest in “The Princess Diaries,” there’s a smattering of ambition present throughout his latest project “The Good Half, “one that can easily find itself in line with the contemporaries above but can’t help but repeatedly trip over its storytelling shoelaces in the process.

Schwartzman began his career as lead vocalist of the rock/pop band Rooney. But circa 2014, he shifted towards writing and directing and directed “Dreamland” (2016), “The Unicorn” (2018), and “The Argument” (2020).

And it’s almost a chore to sift through all the new releases in the app to find something that might be interesting. But sometimes, there are projects that rise above the clutter and intrigue us quite a bit, such as the upcoming series “On the Verge,” starring Julie Delpy.

From “The Walking Dead” and “The Flash” to “Daredevil” and “Preacher,” the established comic book fan base has proven itself force

One of these shows, “Preacher,” is one of AMC’s biggest hits.

Given his background of grindhouse throwbacks of the ’70s and ’80s, you would expect his version of “Death Wish” — a remake of the 1974 Michael Winner film starring Charles Bronson — to be a straightforward exploitation film shot on 16mm, blown up to 35mm, and grimy as all hell.

Frankly, no one particularly noticed or cared, because whatever time of year this movie arrives, it looks like trash. And not the kind that’s enjoyably brain numbing.

Bruce Willis is your new Charles Bronson, in this story of a man who takes the law into his own hands after his wife and daughter are viciously attacked.

In “Piranha 3D,” an outlandish and all together brilliant new shock-a-palooza from French director Alexandre Aja, Richard Dreyfuss, as a Matt Hooper-like schlub (he’s dressed like the character and singing “Show Me the Way to Go Home”), unwittingly triggers some kind of seismic activity when he drops his beer into a lake. The beer, of course, is given the yuk-yuk in-joke name Amity Beer after the besieged island in “Jaws.” And the seismic activity unleashes a swirling mass of killer, prehistoric, flesh-devouring fish.

Elisabeth Shue, Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone,” “X-Men: First Class”) and Max Thieriot (“Jumper”) are all set to star in the forthcoming indie thriller “The House At The End Of The Street.”

The film “centers on a teen girl (Lawrence) who moves with her mom (Shue) to a new town and learns that their home is across the street from a house where a double murder took place. Complications ensue when the teen befriends the massacre’s sole surviving son (Thieriot).” Filmmakers are hoping the project will inspire comparisons to “Psycho” similar to those made between “Disturbia” and “Rear Window.” So, they’re aiming for a watered down, modern take on Hitchcock?

A couple of weeks ago MTV spoke to Abigail Breslin about her upcoming film, “Janie Jones,” that was being shot in Iowa, but other than revealing total basics she was otherwise sworn to secrecy as if she was appearing in a Christopher Nolan film. Well, that plot has been revealed and in case you’re wondering, it has nothing to do with the Clash song by the same name.

It kind of sounds a little “Somewhere”-esque (the recent Sofia Coppola film), a drama about a young girl (Abigail Breslin) who informs a fading rock star (Alessandro Nivola) that she is his daughter.

Who didn’t have a crush on Elisabeth Shue when they were a kid? Hell, who doesn’t have one on her now? She’s 44 years old and still looks incredible. Shue plays herself in the upcoming Steve Coogan comedy “Hamlet 2,” and by playing herself we mean she plays a ‘Malkovich’ like parody of herself; she’s quit the film business, moved to Arizona and become a nurse. “Hamlet 2” is wonderfully absurd and worth seeing. It comes out this Friday (August 22).

You may have problems with “Hamlet 2,” it’s silly, it’s heavy on the irony, it’s pretty absurdist and we thought we wouldn’t like it (we were wrong), but c’mon with irreverant songs like “Rape Me In The Face” and “You’re as Gay as the Day is Long,” how can you not like this thing? You’ve probably already heard “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” as it’s been making the rounds and it should convince you more.

While we all were sleeping, the “Hamlet 2” Soundtrack came out on June 29 and mostly digital it seems, which is odd (not the digital part) because the movie doesn’t come out until August 22.

We’ve been behind on writing about “Hamlet 2,” cause occasionally we like to eat lunch or even sleep an our or two in the evening before work. But it sounds and looks amusing. Our summer film preview on the absurdist comedy went like this:

Who wasn’t obsessed with Elisabeth Shue when they were younger? Sundance 2008’s biggest hit (or at least it’s most expensively sold, it was bought for $10 million by Focus Features) stars Steve Coogan as a a failed actor-turned inept drama teacher trying to motivate his students who develops a fawning and obsessive crush on the real Elisabeth Shue (as played by Elisabeth Shue in a kind of ‘Being John Malkovich’ style meta self-parody).
