And Minghella largely succeeds in his admittedly modest ambitions. It’s too bad he’s had his lunch eaten by Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” a film with an identical premise and analogous execution but a much higher profile.

Crucial to the mix, but sometimes missing in that conversation, is Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” starring Elisabeth Moss, which debuted in 2013, right at the beginning of this new second golden age of TV.

The horror remake was a mega-hit for Blumhouse and Universal, making over 20x its budget at the box office before movie theaters shuttered their doors for months just a few weeks later. So that begs the question: why haven’t Whannell and star Elisabeth Moss made a sequel?

Truthfully, it’s there front and center from the start, a series about shapeshifting spies that lose their sense of identity and self because of all the surreptitious double lives they are leading, a strong concept.

Indiewire recently invited over 35 filmmakers to participate in a list of their favorite films of 2023. One of the filmmakers is the always-controversial Paul Schrader, who has named “Master Gardener” his own movie, one of his fave films of 2023.

Schader’s list in order goes like this:

Master Gardener

Oppenheimer

Barbie

American Fiction

Maestro

Fallen Leaves

Leave the World Behind

Last Summer

Gotta love that he put it above Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig’s highest-grossing films of 2023 movies.

This famously pitiful outfit spent nearly two decades at the bottom of FIFA’s international rankings. So that true story has been brought to life by Taika Waitii (“Thor: Ragnarok”) in a very similar but more humorously imagined comedy called, you guessed it, “Next Goal Wins.”

Starring Michael Fassbender as the constantly-peeved but ultimately caring Dutch coach, “Next Goal Wins” tells the same story of triumph over adversity in a feel-good underdog narrative.

Handmaid red and white (designed by Ane Crabtree in Season 1) has become a go-to ensemble for those protesting restrictions on reproductive rights across the globe. There might be a different administration in the White House, but the landscape remains fraught, and “The Handmaid’s Tale” is the standard pop culture reference when discussing such oppressive laws.

Women’s rights, especially when it comes to reproductive rights, are seemingly under attack, and the oppression seen in the show seems to be a possible glimpse into our own future. So, maybe as we enter Season 5 of the Emmy-winning series, “The Handmaid’s Tale” will become more popular than ever before, as people discover that this alternate history, dystopia isn’t all that far-fetched.

Shows like “Fargo,” “Atlanta,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and “Mayans M.C.” have been on for years and really showcased the quality that FX strives for. Then you have newer entries like “Reservation Dogs,” “The Bear,” “The Old Man,” and “Dave,” showcasing that FX really is just a non-stop factory of great TV.

Just like Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” of which Moss is the lead and now a producer and one of the directors, on “Shining Girls”—an ambitious series about an assault victim, a time-traveling serial killer, and a journalistic procedural to catch the killer—she took on a similar role on a (read our review here).

Having produced, directed, and starred in “The Handmaid’s Tale”—directing several episodes last season and directing the first two episodes and finale for season five—Moss has taken on a holistic view of the show, and she’s applied the same approach to “Shining Girls.”

Adapted and executive produced by Silka Luisa, who also serves as showrunner, “Shining Girls” is based on Lauren Beukes’ best-selling novel of the same name and follows Kirby Mazrachi (Moss) as a Chicago newspaper archivist whose journalistic ambitions are put on hold after enduring a traumatic assault that nearly kills her.

Audiences have been lapping up gruesome material long before television entered the fray and subverting or introducing a different perspective in this genre is a tall task.

Apple TV+’s new limited series “Shining Girls” valiantly takes on this challenge with a story that offers a reality-shifting approach to trauma in the aftermath of a horrifying attack.

One of those projects is the upcoming Hulu series, “Candy,” from the creators of “The Act.” And apparently, the streamer is ready to move ahead with a season of the series, but unfortunately, it seems that Moss is just too darn busy to stay attached, being replaced by Jessica Biel.

Granted, a show dealing with an apocalyptically totalitarian society, known as Gilead, that subjects women, known as “Handmaids,” to child-bearing slavery and servitude, isn’t much of a joyride. However, in the series’ fourth season, the protagonist and central handmaiden, June Osborne’s (Elisabeth Moss) personal demons, threaten to undermine and engulf her in a way that’s unsettling.
