As it turns out, Caan didn’t find Ferrell too amusing on set either.

This has led to a constant question of whether or not Favreau will reteam with Will Ferrell for a sequel to the film. It seems like a no-brainer in an industry where anything popular is squeezed for every last dollar, no matter the creative failings.

But it’s made all the more difficult by the fact that there’s no one in the younger generations that can even come close to filling his shoes. Born to a Jewish butcher who’d come over from Germany, raised on the lively and hardscrabble streets of Sunnyside, Queens, he was so thoroughly identified with blue-collar America that he practically earned an on-screen double citizenship as an honorary Italian.

Released back in 2003, the Will Ferrell film has become a holiday classic over the past couple of decades. And as we’ve seen time after time in Hollywood, you can’t have a hit film (especially one the size of “Elf”) just be left on the shelf. You dust that red and green character off and make multiple sequels, a theme park ride, a toy line, and whatever else you can do to drain it of all the money it’s worth.

Ultimately, the question is moot: Ferrell just is. From his cameo in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” to this week’s “The Other Guys,” Ferrell doesn’t merely act; like Tom Hardy in “Inception,” he embodies his characters, taking the legacy of Konstantin Stanislavski, Lee Strasberg and Marlon Brando and bringing it to its ultimate conclusion.

Tom Morello has joined composer John Debney in scoring for Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man 2.”

The Rage Against The Machine guitarist had a short cameo in the first film and contributed some guitar work to the score as was well. so it’s no major surprise he’ll be doing the same for the sequel. Don’t get too excited though, it’s almost certainly not going to be a composing credit (he didn’t get one on “Iron Man”) and Morello is simply playing the guitar tracks for the music Debney composes.

The New Line boys are back, albeit in a new form. Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne — old New Line execs that rose to promises by shepherding in money making franchise like, “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Lord of the Rings”trilogy, “Austin Powers ” and the “Rush Hour” series — may have been ousted/ quit last year when New Line folded into Warner Bros., but the moguls are back in their scrappy nascent beginnings as producers and a company called, Unique Features which has a three-year first-look deal at Warner Bros.

Thanks for reading this year and we hope you’re having some happy holidays and not being terrorized and tormented by some brutal teenage younger brother (ahem). We’re sorry we never got a chance to do The Playlist gift guide feature we had planned. We ran out of time. However, if for some reason you’re still shopping or you’re not seeing a love one until the New Year, we have three cinephile-centric recommendations. You can always save them for next year.
