Made for a mere $60,000, the film by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez was an instant sensation at Sundance, got invited to Cannes (I bet you forgot about that), and when it was released that summer, it earned a staggering $248 million worldwide. The movie turned found footage into a cottage industry in the horror genre, and a new franchise was born.
