Spoiler alert: Despite its title, Jack Reacher does come back. Now that this misnomer has been addressed, we can dive into the tedious thriller, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” another vehicle for Tom Cruise to kick ass and take names. Like a glorified and dire episode of one of the multitude crime shows on network television — “CSI,” “NCSI,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Criminal Minds,” “Person Of Interest,” take your pick — ‘Never Go Back’ falls back on cliche, hard glances and serious tough guy talk and action.

And in doing so, he places himself into all kinds of danger, but it’s only those who dare to try and take him down that have something to worry about. For those familiar with Lee Child‘s books on which this series is based, that’s pretty much the name of the game, but Tom Cruise brings his own particular brand of stardom to the role.

$218 million worldwide doesn’t seem like the most obvious figure to build a franchise on these days, but Paramount is confident that Tom Cruise can make “Jack Reacher” a major blockbuster series. It’s almost baffling the first movie wasn’t a hit, based on a bestseller by popular thriller writer Lee Child, and offering Cruise in full on tough guy, action mode. But it seems audiences didn’t get it, and “Jack Reacher” barely cleared $80 million domestic — hardly Cruise-esque numbers.

Arguably that’s because of the appearance of Ed Zwick’s “Love And Other Drugs” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. And strangely enough, it appears that the appearance will be the U.S. premiere — the much more prestigious AFI Film Festival in Hollywood does not get the film until November 14 (the film opens in regular release on November 24).

Gabriel Macht, Judy Greer, Oliver Platt, Josh Gad and Hank Azaria co-star in the story based on Jamie Reidy’s nonfiction book, “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.”

The pic has been garnering some award season buzz with a lot of praise for Hathaway.

Yeah, the trailer looks terrible and even on a second glance (which we just did right now), there’s no improvement, but screenwriter Nick Schenk’s script is rather great and definitely wins you over.

Yes, Clint Eastwood (the character’s name is Walt Kowalski, a Korean war vet) is a grumpy old codger in the story, but eventually, he starts to warm to his Hmong neighbors (the Hmong people are actually the little-known Vietnamese that fought with the Americans during the Vietnam war, and then were persecuted and basically driven out of the country once the U.S.

The film’s website still says it’s set for a11.29.08. release date, but according to Variety late last night, Paramount has pushed the film back to March 13, 2009, which pretty much mean its Oscar hopes are over and that the studio probably didn’t have much faith in it winning in the first place (and are probably going to concentrate their efforts on ‘Benjamin Button’ and “Revolutionary Road” instead).
