Directing team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (“Captain Marvel”) have been tapped to bring their quirky expertise to Amazon’s new streaming series “Criminal” by helming the first four episodes. This exciting collaboration, first reported by Deadline, promises to deliver a thrilling adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series. The show tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” 

“Criminal” comes from Marvel Comics and Image Comics; however, the series was not part of the greater Marvel universe (the publisher handles all sorts of comic stories set in and outside their central universe).

Prime Video has been steadily producing some of the most popular adaptations of popular IP over the past several years. Shows like “Jack Ryan,” “Reacher,” and “The Boys” have been solid hits for the streaming service and are all based on pre-existing IP. Now, it appears the streaming service would like to keep that streak going with “Criminal.”

According to THR, Prime Video has given a season order to the new crime thriller series, “Criminal.” Based on the acclaimed comic books of the same name, from writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips, “Criminal” follows various crime stories that are all interlocking in surprising ways.

Marvel Comics has a long history of controversy when it comes to creators’ rights. Technically, it’s not just a Marvel Comics problem, but a problem with all publishers that do “work-for-hire” projects.
