Mindy Kaling has taken her rise to stardom in several different directions. Her work as an actor and writer on “The Office” led to her success with “The Mindy Project” and then the festival film “Late Night” starring herself and Emma Thompson. Lately, she has turned her focus to coming-of-age storytelling, namely with the Netflix hit “Never Have I Ever,” starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as a sophomore in high school trying to change her social status after a traumatizing freshman year.

On paper, “Banana Split” isn’t a wholly unique movie. All you need to do is watch 10 minutes of the film, and the influences of countless teen films released since the ‘80s are evident. But yet, there’s not really another film exactly like “Banana Split,” which flips the teen rom-com formula on its head by focusing on platonic love, pushing the romance to the side, as it deals with issues of loneliness and emotional growth in a period when teens are forced to move on from the comforts of childhood.

If you’ve seen one teen rom-com, you’ve probably seen enough to know the basic story structure and outcome. Despite some being better than others, most teen rom-coms follow very similar plots. But the new film, “Banana Split,” aims to shake that up by making the relationship at the center of the story between two friends, leaving the boy off to the side.

“Banana Split” tells the story of two girls, April and Clara, that start as bitter rivals but become best friends, as they both share a common love interest, Nick.
