Many filmmakers face the grim reality: while they would love to have all audiences watch their movies in theaters, the pandemic is further acclimatizing people to watching their movies at home, and on small devices like iPhones. Directors like David Fincher and Nicolas Winding Refn have admitted they’re aware that audiences watch their films on iPhones, and they can’t really fight it—as long as people are watching, they’re watching.

I’m late to Rewatchables, a podcast on The Ringer podcast. As far as I can tell, it’s a throwback podcast where the hosts and sometimes a guest consider an old, often classic film, rewatch it and discuss that rewatch in a very specific format—how the film holds up, what’s best about it, what’s worst about it, who stands out the most on a new, updated viewing, etc. On one of the most recent episodes of Rewatchable, none other than Quentin Tarantino stopped by to discuss Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.”

The episode is notable for three reasons: one, Tarantino’s presence, obviously, but also because Tarantino apparently listens to Rewatchables (must be nice), and asked to specifically be on the show to discuss “Dunkirk” at his behest which is obviously a huge compliment to both the podcast and Nolan’s film.

The final, yes, the final guild honor to be handed out before the Academy Awards this year were the CAS Awards on Saturday night, and there were few surprises from the Cinema Audio Society.  The guild awarded honors to the presumptive winner of the Sound Mixing Oscar, “Dunkirk,” as well as the massively popular “Game of Thrones.”

Other winners included “Coco,” “Jane” (a major guild winner that was snubbed by the Academy), “Silicon Valley” and “Black Mirror: USS Callister.”

After Guillermo del Toro won the DGA Award this weekend for “The Shape of Water” it would appear the Fox Searchlight fantasy is on its way to ruling Oscar night.  It’s incredibly rare for a film to win both the DGA and PGA Award as “Shape” has and not win Best Picture although it’s not unheard of.  In fact, it’s slightly more common than we tend to remember, but it’s also slightly complicated.

While we still have a month to go until the Oscars, that hardly means the awards season is over. This morning, the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma unveiled its nominations for the César Awards aka France’s Oscars.

Leading the pack with 13 nominations each was the AIDS drama “BPM” and Albert Dupontel’s WWI drama “Au Revoir Là-Haut.” Though receiving largely rave reviews for much of the season, “BPM” is notable for not making the cut in the Best Foreign Film race at the Oscars.

A chance to cheer when great movies like “The Shape Of Water” receive a brace of nominations, a chance to curse the heavens with cathartic rage when a favorite is excluded (*shakes fist at sky* “The Florida Project”!!), a chance to celebrate boundaries being broken by filmmakers like Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele and Dee Rees, and a chance to beam on behalf of great actors like Daniel Kaluuya, Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney and Laurie Metcalf when they receive overdue recognition.

The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23rd, a rare year when they are revealed after the PGA and SAG Awards have already been handed out.

The nominations for the 20th Costume Designer Guild Awards were revealed today and thanks to three thematic categories for both Movies and TV there were few omissions to complain about.  Expected Oscar nominees “Phantom Thread,” “The Shape of Water” and “The Greatest Showman” all made the cut in the very competitive Period Film field with Jacqueline Durran‘s work in “Darkest Hour” and Ann Roth‘s costumes for “The Post” being the only true snubs (although Durran did earn a Sci-Fi/Fantasy nod for “Beauty and the Beast”).

The American Society of Cinematographers announced the 2018 nominees for the ASC Awards. Like many guild honors it’s seen as a precursor for the equivalent category at the Academy Awards and this year that’s good news for Netflix and “Mudbound.”

“Mudbound’s” Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever nominated for this honor by the ASC and if she earns an Oscar nomination she’d also make history with the Academy in that respect (both stats are embarrassing, frankly).

Over 6,500 BAFTA members around the world voted for the 2018 British Academy Film Awards and Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” led all films with 12 nominations. “Darkest Hour” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” each earned nine nominations with “Blade Runner 2049” and “Dunkirk” each.taking eight nods each. “Call Me by Your Name” and “Phantom Thread” took four each while “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” “I, Tonya,” “Lady Bird” and “Paddington 2” receive three nominations each.

As Disney is set to become an even bigger behemoth with the acquisition of Fox, many members of the press are wary about what this might mean in terms of access. It was only a few months ago when Disney banned the L.A. Times from covering their films, a measure of retaliation against what they said was an unfair piece about their theme parks. Backlash was fierce, and in matter of days, the ban was lifted against the paper.

Outside of the cinephile favorite “Call Me By Your Name” the nominees included indie hits such as “The Big Sick,” “Lady Bird,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “The Shape of Water” as well as broad players that are less indie than they seem, “I, Tonya” and “Molly’s Game.”  Trow in traditional studio releases such as “The Post,” “Dunkirk” and, surprise, “Wonder Woman” and you have your ten.
