“BS!” exclaims Bryce Dallas Howard’s spy novelist Elly Conway when she learns the real identity of the titular secret agent in “Argylle.” For once in the film, her character’s savant-like gift for understanding exactly what the audience should feel tracks. Here, that’s disbelief tinged with disappointment.

An online rumor recently made the rounds saying filmmaker Matthew Vaughn was next in line to take over the James Bond franchise, and it’s fitting but almost laughable. Because Vaughn, who actively sought the James Bond gig early in his directing life, has basically made an entire career of doing his own spy franchises, almost snubbing his nose at Bond in the process. He’s made the entire ‘Kingsman’ film series which has spawned three films, one of which is a prequel, and now, he’s launching a whole new spy series with Apple called “Argylle.”

Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with “X-Men” projects. Recently, they announced that Hugh Jackman will reprise his Wolverine role in “Deadpool 3,” plus mutants like Namor appear in the upcoming “Black Panther” sequel, and mutant gene was teased for the lead character in “Ms. Marvel.” It’s unclear what Marvel’s plans are for mutants beyond that, though Kevin Feige recently teased that they’re “getting close,” but there might be some interest in tackling less exposed mutants down the line.

As expected, Taylor Swift dominated the 2020 Grammy Awards nominations earning six nods including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. What was slightly unexpected was Dua Lipa tying her in overall Grammy nods, including those categories and landing Record of the Year for “Don’t Start Now.” Surprisingly, despite predictions neither landed the most nominations. That honor went to Beyonce, of course, with nine.

Roddy Rich also earned six nominations while Brittany Howard earned five.

The Recording Academy handed out the winners of the 2019 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night and a number of the early awards went to movie-centric nominees.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper won Best Song Written For Visual Media for “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” Ludwig Göransson work for “Black Panther” won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and “The Greatest Showman” took best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media.

There are certain things you can expect from a James Cameron film. There’s going to be visuals that knock your socks off. You’re going to see technology used in some amazing way that elevates the content on the screen. And you’re going to have a score that adds to the overall “epic” feeling of the project. Even though Cameron didn’t direct “Alita: Battle Angel,” as a writer and producer, the filmmaker brings all of that to the film, including a pulse-pounding, epic score.
