Maybe it’s time to let the old ways of this almost-finished decade die, yeah? But it wouldn’t be complete without our deep dive into the best soundtracks and scores of the 2010s. It’s admittedly somewhat weird and difficult to do. Scores and soundtracks are different beasts; one original musical written for a film that gives it its emotional shape—often the secret MVP of a movie—and the other more of a mixtape, but when well-curated and used next to picture, can be just as deadly and help craft what we know as the visual and aural transcendence that’s known as cinema when it’s at its best.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is a pretty excruciating experience for audience members, let alone those that actually worked on the film. However, sitting through the 2-hour film in the comfort of a climate-controlled theater, as bad as it was, doesn’t compare to what star Oscar Isaac had to endure during the filming of the project.

In a new interview with GQ, Isaac goes over his most “iconic” characters, which includes his work on incredible films like “Annihilation,” “Ex Machina,” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” However, one of his iconic roles turned out to be much worse than he bargained for when he said okay.

Without a doubt, one of the best scores and soundtracks of the last decade is from Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive.” Regarded by many as Refn’s finest work, the neo-noir film was a moderate hit at the box office but has gained a cult fan base, due in part to the terrific music in the movie. Now, fans are in luck, as there’s a new limited edition vinyl re-release of the Cliff Martinez‘s score on the way to celebrate the film’s fifth anniversary.

This week, just a month or so after it premiered in Cannes to a now-traditional Refn reception of mingled admiration and jeers (we were among the admirers), “The Neon Demon” comes to theaters. But though we enjoyed splashing about in its overly stylized, glossily shot shallows, where does “The Neon Demon” sit amid the Danish filmmaker’s catalogue? We figured now would be a good time to revisit his filmography, considering the last time we did so was before the release of his later-career-defining, Cannes Best Director-winning “Drive.”

Refn (who is colorblind, trivia fans, and can’t see mid-colors, hence the high level of contrast in all his works) was pretty much born into the business, his mother a successful photographer, his father himself a director and editor in the Danish film industry (he cut Lars von Trier‘s “Breaking the Waves” and “Antichrist,” which makes Refn’s recent trashtalking about his fellow Dane all the more, um, cutting).

And while it might seem like Refn has been actively avoiding his more populist tendencies since the success of “Drive,” he says that at the time, some involved with the movie weren’t confident that it was going to work.

It should come as no surprise that we around here are big fans of Nicolas Winding Refn. The Danish director has put together the eclectic and divisive body of work of an artist unafraid to push the envelope and venture into new territory, which inevitably means missing the mark now and again. But that’s exactly what makes Refn so fascinating: even his misfires are interesting. Everything he does is bold, brazen, and extremely stylistic, and his failures seem almost like failures simply because they didn’t quite live up to their promise (see “Only God Forgives“).
