That led to Leigh Whannell’s domestic abuse horror thriller “Invisible Man” and many new announcements. One of them is Chris McKay’s “Renfield,” penned by “Rick & Morty” writer Ryan Ridley placing iconic characters from “Dracula” into more of a humorous setting, further illustrating Uni’s desire to make one-off films that don’t need to connect.

Cinema has helped us grasp this concept over the decades, with variations on the folk horror archetype colored by some most frightening of human feelings: addiction, lust, control, and isolation. For as much as vampires cannot see themselves in the mirror, they’re reflections of ourselves, shapeshifting throughout different cultural periods.

The tradition of vampirism also brings out authorship from directors, with many using the setup for their own expression: the likes of Park Chan-wook, George Romero, Jim Jarmusch, Abel Ferrara, Catherine Hardwicke, Guillermo del Toro, Amy Heckerling, for just a taste.

We saw that already with Blumhouse’s take on “The Invisible Man” from last year. We’re already seeing it happen again with a new “Wolfman” with Ryan Gosling and a new “Dracula” sci-fi reimagining from Chloe Zhao.

We’re only in early February and her recent film, “Nomadland,” has been released to rave reviews and has earned a ton of awards recognition, with Oscars likely in her future. Then the fun is only going to keep going, as “Eternals,” her big Marvel film, is set to hit in November. All that to say, Zhao is on the cusp of being able to do whatever the hell she wants to do next.

Originally meant to compete with Marvel, the studio’s attempt to reboot the various Universal Monsters in one cohesive continuity bombed before it really took off thanks to “The Mummy” reboot starring Tom Cruise.

So when last month we heard a report that Karyn Kusama would oversee a new “Dracula,” there was plenty of excitement going around. Turns out, while some of us took only to social media to share our excitement, Sebastian Stan wasted no time to shoot his shot and try to get cast in the actual movie.

That’s what happens when a studio releases a low-budget horror film that has earned almost 15x its production budget in almost two weeks of release worldwide. So, now comes word that Blumhouse is moving on from “The Invisible Man” and staking its claim to “Dracula,” and the production company has lined up some pretty incredible talent to bring the franchise to life.

Remember the age of TV when you basically had breaks every now and then between debuts of huge, highly-anticipated series? Well, those days are long gone as the era of Peak TV rules all and with that, a never-ending flood of TV shows that your friends, family, and co-workers will swear that “you must watch!” We’re barely a few days into 2020 and Netflix has the latest series to fit that bill — “Dracula.”

“Wait, Dracula?

The same with extreme close-ups of bloody red meat and a fly crawling on someone’s eyeball. Obviously, if you’re trying to freak people out in a trailer, these are the types of images you show. And that’s exactly what Netflix has done in the new teaser for its upcoming “Dracula” series.

This new take on Bram Stoker’s classic tale comes from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the two men responsible for coming up with a great reimagining of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC drama “Sherlock.” And if the new teaser for “Dracula” is any indication, the guys are taking their unique viewpoint and putting it through a horror lens, creating a series that aims to tell the classic story of Count Dracula, but with the style and creativity that was shown in “Sherlock.” And yes, it looks pretty scary.

Variety is reporting that Fletcher has signed on with Universal to direct “Renfield,” which is said to be a present-day film that puts a spin on the classic Dracula tale by focusing on the villain’s henchman, R.M.

Not that remakes and adaptations don’t happen all the time, but we’ve really seen quite a few “Dracula” films and TV series over the decade, with many being really great. But thankfully, it appears Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are bringing something unique to their adaptation of the horror classic, which is coming to BBC and Netflix soon.
