It’s already been a banner 2024 for HBO and Max, with “True Detective: Night Country,” “Tokyo Vice” Season 2, and “The Regime” all scoring high with critics and audiences. So what’s the next hotly anticipated title for HBO to debut? That’d be “The Sympathizer,” Park Chan-wook‘s first TV project since 2018’s “The Little Drummer Girl.”

Yesterday, we shared the news that David Cronenberg seemed to be lining up a summer start date for his new film, tentatively titled “Crimes of the Future.” Well, that news has not only been confirmed but we have more cast members and a full synopsis. Yes, Cronenberg fans, it’s time to get excited.

Mix one part A-ha’s “Take on Me” with a little “Stranger Than Fiction,” and apparently out comes “Zoom,” starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Alison Pill. Directed by Pedro Morelli, the film looks like it could grab a lot of attention with its mixture of live action and animation in a story about a comic book creator whose work comes to life.

New Posters & Synopsis For Bruce McDonald’s Women’s Prison Martial Arts Film, ‘Lucky Ho’

Last month during the SXSW Film Festival, The Playlist sat down with prolific Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald and got the scoop on his next project.

Titled, “Lucky Ho,” the B-movie, grindhouse-sounding film is expected to shoot this summer, in July or August, and McDonald told us, “[It’s] a women’s prison martial arts project. It’s awesome. It’s kind of filthy, hilarious and wrong. We gotta find some totally smoking hot Chinese babe who can kick ass and be naked in the shower a lot.” Sounds like something Quentin Tarantino would love (Tarantino’s brief Miramax DVD distribution arm Rolling Thunder Pictures released McDonald’s “Hard Core Logo” in the U.S.

SXSW Review: ‘This Movie Is Broken’ Is Chaotic, Messy & Real

Broken Social Scene is a band created and ruled by the force of chaos. I’m not as familiar with their entire body of work as I should be, but am instead more of a follower of their offshoots/co-conspirators (Leslie Feist, Stars). SXSW hosted the world premiere of “This Movie Is Broken,” which is part BSS concert doc and part narrative love story. Even though I’m not a die-hard fan of the band, I was really quite taken by the whole endeavor.

At the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas for the world premiere for his latest film “This Movie Is Broken” — a quasi narrative/ concert documentary revolving around Toronto orchestral rockers Broken Social Scene written by well-known Canuck scribe Don McKellar — the director has barely been able to catch his breath in the last 12 months.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced films for its event that runs March 12 – March 20, 2010. Chris Morris’ pitch-black satire “Four Lions” has been chosen as the closing night film, but honestly we haven’t heard of that one. Of interest to us are as follows:

Elijah Drenner’s “American Grindhouse” which is a documentary on American exploitation films (sure to have appearances by Quentin Tarantino and other likely suspects) and Ivan Engler and Ralf Etter sci-fi film, “Cargo” from Switzerland.

Canadian director Bruce McDonald has been busy — so busy in fact, that IMDB can’t even keep up. Luckily, the director recently spoke to Toronto’s Eye Weekly and let them know what he’s currently up to.

Right now, the director is in the midst of shooting his latest film, the “My Dinner With Andre”-inspired “Trigger.” While MacDonald’s initial idea was to stick to the “one table/one dinner” format, writer Daniel MacIvor convinced him to open up the setting a bit and now the film is about two friends waxing nostalgic over an evening in Toronto.

Bruce McDonald & Don McKellar To Direct Broken Social Scene UGC-Centered Film, ‘This Movie Is Broken’

The idea of a homegrown movie on the subject of ever-expanding Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene is nothing really new. As far back as 2003, Toronto music writer Stuart Berman was making his own documentary on the group (we know, we interviewed BSS at the time and were caught doing so on his cameras). That film still seems to be a work-in-progress, but Berman — a longtime friend of the group — did write and just release, This Book Is Broken earlier this month (July 1), an intimate lively oral history of the band.

Review: ‘Blindless’ Is Like ‘Children Of Men’ Without The Bite Or Threat

We just got back from our “day before the release” screening of “Blindness.” Having received mixed reviews, Fernando Meirelles’s latest (“City of God”) isn’t as terrible as some say, but it’s not very good either. The positive aspects of the film aren’t enough to outweigh the unfavorable second half of the film. The main thing going against the picture are its similarities to superior post-apocalyptic films such as “28 Days Later” and “Children of Men.” When comparing the three films (which one can’t help but do here), “Blindness” can’t help but fall short.

No One Can See Jackshit In This New ‘Blindness’ Trailer

The new trailer for “Blindness,” José Saramago’s 1995 apocalyptic-like story of a worldwide epidemic robbing people of their sight is online and it looks tentatively pretty powerful and engrossing. Directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “The Constant Gardener,”) the picture was the opening film at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this May and opens in North America on September 19.

The adaptation written by Canadian filmmaker, Don Mckellar, the film stars Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael García Bernal, Alica Braga and Julianne Moore as the only person immune to the epidemic of blindness.
