Paramount Pictures is all in on “A Quiet Place” as one of their continuing franchises, as the first two movies focused on the Abbott family’s harrowing survival (thanks to sign language and their deaf daughter preparing them for silent communication) after aliens have wiped out a bunch of the human population as they’re attracted to sound and kill anyone that makes too much noise by making their presence aware to the deadly threat.

Zack Snyder’s fantasy sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon,” once a “Star Wars” pitch reconfigured to be an original project, wasn’t exactly well-received upon its release last December (read our review). Trounced by critics, the film has a dismal 21% Rotten Tomatoes score, and even the generally more lenient audience score is negative. Still, the show must go on as the sequel, ‘The Scargiver,’ is already in the can and ready for imminent release.

It’s a generous move given that “A Child Of Fire, the first installment in his space opera was hit with scathing reviews when it debuted earlier this month (read our review), but one supposes, Snyder is no grinch, doesn’t mind and wants to keep the drum beating for his new series (it’s on our list of the 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2024, so let’s hope the ‘Scargiver’ is much better.

Zack Snyder’s forthcoming sci-fi space opera “Rebel Moon” is a project he’s been kicking around for over ten years. It started out as an R-rated “Star Wars” film idea in 2012 that he pitched to Kathleen Kennedy. “I thought that “Star Wars” was in a vulnerable state, so I thought I had a chance,” Snyder said in a recent THR profile. It then morphed into a “”Game of Thrones” in space” television series idea until Snyder eventually shaped it into the two-part Netflix epic it is now.

Originally pitched as a new “Star Wars” tale in the days when Disney was taking new Lucasfilm pitches, Zack Snyder took a no or a maybe, and made it his own with his upcoming film, “Rebel Moon.” From those nascent beginnings, seeing if Kathleen Kennedy was interested, Snyder crafted a big space opera of his own and took it to his new home at Netflix where he’s already set up shop with his zombie franchise, “Army Of The Dead.”

Snyder’s ethos seems to be go big or go home so for “Rebel Moon” he did just that, taking one big movie and splitting it into two, “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire,” which comes out this year in December and “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver” which is now set to arrive in April 2024.

Director Zack Snyder is moving towards his future at Netflix as the streaming giant is just about to begin filming “Rebel Moon,” his second original film that is loosely based on a sci-fi take of Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece “Seven Samurai.” The project even initially started as a “Star Wars” pitch to Lucasfilm.

Matthew Vaughn loved the Bond series, but when he couldn’t finagle his way into making one of those films, he decided to start his own “Kingsmen” franchise. Low and behold it worked and the third film in the series, a prequel called, “The King’s Man,” is heading to theaters this December after multiple Covid-19-related delays.

Faced with tough realities about releasing movies in the spring (because theaters essentially won’t open then), the studio had now axed “A Quiet Place Part II“s most recent scheduled release of April 23, 2021, instead, delaying the film to September 17, 2021, as mentioned by Exhibitor Relations on Twitter.

If “Serenity” were a book, it’d be the sort of trashy beach-ready thriller you’d read on a Kindle, so you’d be saved the raised eyebrows as a result of the embarrassing cover. But just like a book, you cannot judge this movie by appearances. Written and directed by Steven Knight, this would-be neo-noir at first appears to angle for “Key Largo” territory, but then swerves toward some forgotten ’80s pulp, before taking a whiplash-inducing hard left into something else entirely.

When tackling classic adventure stories, “modernization” can mean two very different things. One end of the spectrum is formal, where a new telling rebuilds the entire context for a story, giving us a new understanding of why it matters. Then there’s the aesthetic version, which usually ends up as something more slick and speedy, dressed up but really just the same old thing in a new suit. “The Legend of Tarzan” pretends to be the former, but it is really only the latter — an effects-heavy blockbuster version of the Tarzan tale with delusions of awareness ultimately sold out in favor of crass thrills.
