While “Gran Turismo” won the weekend box office the past few days, it’s clear the Sony film from director Neill Blomkamp isn’t going to break any records. But if Blomkamp were to commit to the long-awaited sequel to his Oscar-nominated film, “District 9,” aptly titled “District 10,” then maybe the filmmaker would be looking at a true blockbuster. Unfortunately for fans hoping to see it, though it has been announced, it’s clear “District 10” isn’t at the top of Blomkamp’s to-do list.

Director Neill Blomkamp’s first feature film debut, “District 9,” the Johannesburg-set sci-fi, action pic was a bonafide banger. The sci-fi film took a dark theme like South Africa’s apartheid, and segregation and applied it to aliens. Sharing some DNA with the 1988 film “Alien Nation,” the film used non-humanoid aliens to establish drastic differences between the two populations. A rather large swing, the bold choices earned “District 9” four Oscar nominations in 2010, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

So, when “District 9” was released more than a decade ago and ended scoring pretty solid box office (the biggest worldwide gross for a South African film ever) and multiple Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), the fact that a sequel to Neill Blomkamp’s film was never produced is pretty shocking. Well, it appears that, 11 years later, the filmmaker is beginning work on the long-awaited “District 10.”

Neill Blomkamp is currently in a pretty fascinating part of his career. For the moment, he’s stepped away from Hollywood and launched his own Oats Studio, an experimental business that sees the filmmaker trying to get his various works directly to fans – while using the opportunity to try out different genres and VFX on the fly. Blomkamp has long been interested in bringing his own ideas to the big screen instead of working on someone else’s branded property, (no, I haven’t forgotten about “Alien,” more on that in a second) so don’t expect him to run to Marvel or DC Films anytime soon.

It’s been a couple of years now since Neill Blomkamp‘s (underrated) “Chappie,” and the director has been keeping his head down on his own projects. Of course, his name bubbled back into the conversation when he posted concept art for his mooted “Alien 5,” a film that would take place after “Aliens” and spinoff into its own storyline. Ridley Scott pretty much kiboshed those plans as he continued down the path made by “Prometheus” and last month’s “Alien: Covenant,” and as the godfather of the franchise, has made it clear Blomkamp’s movie isn’t happening.
