The 2010s saw the return of a number of forgotten trends: tiny sunglasses, hating “Star Wars,” and – most importantly – the word “horny.” The once juvenile, decidedly-male word has shifted into something greater: more gender-woke, more surreal. “Horny” still refers, of course, to sex, desirous hunger, thirstiness, and this image (and this one too). But it has also evolved to feature many more implications and describes any number of feelings – excitement, transgression, titillation, and intrigue.

Though we’ll all already be plenty busy dodging our exes at parades and scrubbing glitter out of our clothes, this June offers LGBTQ people everywhere a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come. This year is an especially important one, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, when an uprising at a gay club in New York City galvanized gay and transgender people across the country.

We’ve done just about as much coverage of the 2017 year as we can and, while we’ve already managed to hit some bumps in the one week of 2018 we’ve plowed through, we’re ready to look ahead. Over the course of the year, we’re oftentimes lucky enough to attend film festivals all over the world and, while many of the of the films covered are ones that have a trajectory of sorts throughout the current year’s slate (awards buzz), there are plenty that fall by the wayside as they await distribution, release dates and more.

Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Telluride have all had their turn. Now, it’s time for the global cinema spotlight to shine on the Toronto International Film Festival. For artistic director Cameron Bailey each year is an adventure as the Canadian institution programs one of the largest slates of films in the world (this year’s festival topped out at 255 feature length films).

Bailey, who has been in his current position since 2012, has the unique responsibility of programming not only a wide number of films looking for commercial distribution (TIFF’s acquisition market is arguably on par with Sundance depending on the year), but awards season films either looking for a major world premiere gala or another opportunity to show their wares.

The Telluride Film Festival is in the rear-view mirror and the Venice Film Festival will finish up this week and that means they’ll both give way to the Toronto International Film Festival, easily the largest film festival in North America, and in terms of sheer size and volume, probably the largest film festival in the world. TIFF usually houses around 300 films or so, and it’s such a wide and varied event, you can curate it to your tastes: you could stick with glossy mainstream picks with stars, indie up-and-comers, Midnight Madness pictures, foreign films, documentaries, experimental films, and shorts if you wish.

Whatever is going on in the Chilean filmmaking community, we don’t want it to stop. Last year, we got treated to a double whammy of films from Pablo Larrain with “Neruda” and “Jackie.” Now, his colleague Sebastian Lelio is gearing up for a two-fer of his own. Earlier this year he unveiled the excellent “A Fantastic Woman,” and while that movie is headed to the Toronto International Film Festival to continue picking up accolades, the director will also be unveiling a new picture with “Disobedience.”

Starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and based on the book by Naomi Alderman, the film tells the story of a woman who must return to the London Orthodox Jewish community she fled years prior after the death of her father, who was the preeminent rabbi.

It’s auteurs and high profile titles left and right, with plenty of dive into. Right at the top of our must-see list is Darren Aronofsky‘s “mother!” starring Jennifer Lawrence, with Scott Cooper‘s “Hostiles” starring Christian Bale, and Sebastian Lelio‘s “Disobedience” high on our list.
