Chris Cunningham Reworks Donna Summer’s Disco Classic For Stunning Gucci Commercial

Rodrigo Perez — Wed, 15 Apr 2009 18:58:00 +0000

In October of last year, we wrote a lengthy feature asking where Chris Cunningham had been. Who’s Chris Cunningham you ask?

Well, put it this way: in the original Director’s Label series — a now seminal series of DVDs highlighting the work of notable music video director’s — there were three important filmmakers featured, Michel Gondry (we mentioned his new music video DVD today), Spike Jonze and Chris Cunnignham.

Cunningham created arresting visual works of a grotesquely abstract mien with disturbing imagery for artists like Madonna (“Frozen“), Portishead (“Only You“), Aphex Twin (“Windowlicker,” “Come To Daddy“), Squarepusher (“Come On My Selector”), Björk (the lesbian robots of “All Is Full of Love“) and Autechre (“Second Bad Vilbel“).

Michel Gondry’s Second Video Collection, ‘More Videos 2’ Hits April 14; Features Radiohead Video The Band Hated

Rodrigo Perez — Thu, 09 Apr 2009 17:14:00 +0000

As we reported last year, Michel Gondry launched a new website and announced plans for a DVD called, “Gondry 2: More Videos” which would act as an unaffiliated part two to his Director’s Label video DVD collection, “The Work of Director Michel Gondry” that came out in 2003.

Michel Gondry Hearts Himself Some Music Videos, Spike Jonze & Micheal Jackson; Hates Radiohead

Now we love us some people that work at EW (hey guys), but this feature on Michel Gondry’s Top 25 Videos is clearly just an excuse to click through photo galleries. So let’s make it easier on everybody for presentation’s sake (sorry, we don’t want to click 25 times, so we’ll do you the public service announcement favor so you don’t have to; plus we hate that kind shit).

One interesting music movie news tidbit, Gondry says the singer of his old band Oui Oui, Etienne Charry is “doing the music for my films now.” YouTube links on all the videos.

Directors Label Series Kaput?

Rodrigo Perez — Mon, 23 Apr 2007 23:53:00 +0000

Remember the very excellent Directors Label series founded by Michel Gondry, Chris Cunnigham and Spike Jonze that highlighted the music videos of some amazing filmmakers? The series, which last round featured the work of Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn and Stephane Sednaoui, was to feature Mike Mills (“Thumbsucker,” videos by Air, Moby and Jon Spencer) and Hammer & Tongs (“Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy,” vids by Blur, Supergrass, Badly Drawn Boy) next. The series also hoped to present the work of Roman Coppola, Shynola and Jean-Baptiste Mondino, plus a separate hip-hop series with Paul Hunter, Little X, and Chris Robinson.
