The first woman to be nominated in the Feature Film category was Lina Wertmüller in 1977. Another woman, Barbra Streisand, wasn’t nominated until 1992. Only four other women have been nominated since with Kathryn Bigelow winning for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010. Over four decades after Wertmüller crashed the party the DGA finally showed a sliver of equity as “Nomadland’s” Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman’s” Emerald Fennell were both nominated in the same year.

Theater chains have blasted the idea, already. But now, we get to hear the official word from the Directors Guild of America (DGA) about WarnerMedia’s decision to release WB’s 2021 film slate day-and-date on HBO Max and in theaters. And unsurprisingly, the organization that represents directors and their best interests doesn’t approve of a move that was made without consulting the filmmakers.

In an open letter (via Deadline) to CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and Network Group, Ann Sarnoff, the head of the DGA, Russell Hollander, spoke bluntly about the move made by the studio and how it’s going to negatively affect the directors involved, as well as set a dangerous precedent during an uncertain time.

Basically, it’s been a really rough week for WarnerMedia, as stars, filmmakers, and guilds have been just a few of the entities upset with this unprecedented move.

He, along with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, talked to experts in the field and did plenty of research to figure out what our world would look like.

With #MeToo and Time’s Up leading the charge for people speaking up about the abuses occurring behind-the-scenes, more attention has been brought on the roles of women and directors of color in the system, and how the industry has truly been dominated by white males. Now, in a new report from the Directors Guild of America, we’re starting to see that change is happening.

However, unlike previous years, the DGA President is sick of the trend and is demanding change.

In the new report published, the DGA found that of the 651 feature films released theatrically, which includes limited release and those that grossed under $250,000, only 16% were directed by females.
