With just a couple of modest releases going wide this weekend, Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” should probably still reign supreme. Though Warner Bros. is marketing the shit out of “Cop Out” and middle America does love Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

In Wide Release: Frequent Flyer Kevin Smith marks his first time directing a script he did not write with this week’s “Cop Out.” The genuinely insane Tracy Morgan stars alongside genuinely bored Bruce Willis as two, you guessed it, cops on the trail of a baseball-card obsessed gangster.

‘Defendor’ Movie Hits Theaters Very Limited Feb 26; Comes Out On DVD, April 13

Anyone remember the TIFF 2009 film, “Defendor“?

Directed by Peter Stebbings, it starred Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings and looked and sounded like a lo-fi, and possibly lo-budget, make-shift super-hero film.

According to the TIFF site, “when night falls and danger emerges from the shadows of Hammer Town’s alleyways, Defendor is the only man who stands between us and the drug-ravaged streets. He is the last bastion of decency, the last honorable man: he is Defendor!” It seemed it was basically about a guy with mental problems (Harrelson), who thought he was some sort of super hero.

Nic Cage Apparently Too Good For ‘Green Hornet’; LeBron James To Make Film Debut

– Nicolas Cage talked to the Canadian Press about turning down the villain’s role in “The Green Hornet,” the part taken earlier this week by Christoph Waltz, suggesting that the character wasn’t well developed enough, and that he “wasn’t interested in just being just straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly.” Apparently he missed the rich, three-dimensional characters from “Ghost Rider” and “The Wicker Man.” [Superhero Hype]

– Woody Harrelson/Kat Dennings-starring indie superhero movie “Defendor” has been picked up by Sony Pictures in a seven figure deal.

‘Tron Legacy’ To Do Battle With ‘The Green Hornet,’ Mike Judge Reveals Next Project, Kevin Smith Faces Same Old Title Problems With ‘A Couple Of Dicks

– “Tron Legacy” has officially been given a December 17th 2010 release date, the same day that Michel Gondry’s “The Green Hornet” now opens (it was pushed back five months just recently). Watch as geeks will freak out at the box office trying to decide which film to see before attempting to theater-hop their way into both. More importantly though, when is that Daft Punk soundtrack for the film coming out?

– Kevin Smith’s is facing the same old problems with a title change on his upcoming film “A Couple Of Dicks” looking imminent.

More TIFF 2009 Photos: ‘Jennifer’s Body,’ ‘Defendor,’ ‘Mr. Nobody’

Between the TIFF site and Collider, a bunch of new photos from related Toronto Int. Film Festival pictures are popping up online, as the festival is just around the corner. Plus it’s a bit of a slow afternoon.

More images (though some you’ve seen) of Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried from the Diablo Cody-penned, “Jennifer’s Body,” which is a satirical dark horror comedy hybrid that basically takes the sarcastic edge of “Heathers” and melds it with the tropes of slasher and horror flicks.
