Most of the time, these sequels are studio-driven cash-grabs that fail to live up to the original film and quickly dash the hopes of eager fans. But sometimes, just sometimes, a sequel to a horror hit is great. And on this episode of The Playlist Podcast, a George A. Romero classic, an iconic slasher, and maybe Sam Raimi’s most ridiculous film are all discussed as some of the best horror sequels of all time.

It’s not unusual for the director to switch genres between films and the cast that he had signed on for his zombie film, eventually titled “The Dead Don’t Die,” was stellar.

The director of “300,” “Watchmen,” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has finally decided on what his very next project is going to be, and thanks to the folks at Netflix, this film will showcase Snyder without any restrictions. God help us all.

THR is reporting that Snyder has signed with Netflix to direct the film, “Army of the Dead.” As the name might suggest, ‘Army’ is the director’s return to the zombie genre that kickstarted his career in 2004 with “Dawn of the Dead.” And it would appear that the original sequel that he has developed in 2008 but was never made is now getting ready to begin production thanks to Netflix and its large bank account.

The first installment of any horror movie, the ones crystallized into the canon as classic anyhow, is often like a wonderful honeymoon where everything is new and rosy. But as the marriage goes on and the bloom falls of the rose, horror movies can yield some seriously painful diminishing returns that can mar a franchise.

Last week, we tackled the best foreign-language horrors (and we’ve previously done the best of the 21st century to date), but with the lack of good new films in theaters as such, it seemed like a good time to look back —in this case, specifically to the 1970s.
