‘Slingshot’: Casey Affleck To Star Opposite Laurence Fishburne In The Sci-Fi Drama

Casey Affleck hasn’t been completely missing from films over the past several years, but you would really have to hunt down his movies to see them. Since the controversy arose with allegations of inappropriate misconduct on the set of “I’m Still Here,” that (re)surfaced after the release of “Manchester By The Sea,” Affleck has taken on smaller roles in indie films and lower-profile features. Well, his upcoming movie, “Slingshot,” looks to be his most high-profile project in years.

‘Britannia’ Trailer: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Goes Rock ‘n Roll

There’s going to be over 500 scripted TV shows on the dial this year, but we tried to whittle it down to just 50 for our Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2018 feature. “Brittania” made the cut, and since “Game Of Thrones” is skipping a year before its final season in 2019, this could help fill the void.

David Morrissey, Kelly Reilly, Zoe Wanamaker, Ian McDiarmid and Mackenzie Crook star in the series that takes place in 43 AD (very olden tymes), and centers on the Romans quest for power over the Celtics.

David Morrissey Options Film Rights To Julian Cope Autobiography ‘Head On’; Rhys Ifans Could Star

English actor/director David Morrissey — who delivered an outstanding turn in the recent “Red Riding” trilogy as a guilt-ridden police detective superintendent — has secured the rights to the film rights to “Head On,” the autobiography of heralded British rock musician Julian Cope.

In mainstream circles, Cope is best remembered for the 1984 pop slice, “World Shut Your Mouth” (also the name of his solo debut album). In music snob circles, he’s probably best known as the frontman for the Liverpudlian post-punk outfit The Teardrop Explodes (best remembered for the song, “Reward,” and they took their name from issue #77 of Marvel Comics’ Daredevil).

‘Red Riding’ Trilogy To Hit New York In Exclusive Road Show Form For One Week

Last week we fell behind when the trailer and poster for IFC’s “Red Riding” Trilogy — a triptych of films that center around the manhunt for the “Yorkshire Ripper,” a serial killer who terrorized northwest England in the 1970s and ’80s — was released. Well, now we have a good excuse to catch up and post them.

Written by Tony Grisoni (Terry Gilliam collaborator on “Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas” and the upcoming ‘Quixote’ re-do), and adapted from novels by David Peace, the trio of films were directed by Julian Jarrold (“Brideshead Revisited”), James Marsh (“Man on Wire”), and Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) and they sound like a pretty epic event (Ridley Scott apparently already wants to remake them).

LFF ’09: ‘Nowhere Boy’ Is Just That; An Abject Failure

The 53rd Times BFI London Festival has been pretty good to us, so far – we’ve seen more good movies in the past few weeks than in the rest of the year combined, with relatively few disappointments, and it’s been a much stronger year than last. It’s a shame then, that the closing night film, “Nowhere Boy,” is such a misfire. We’d been faintly concerned about the movie for a while, but director, and former artist, Sam Taylor-Wood’s debut short film “Love You More” was so good, and we’d heard such great buzz about the script, that we’d been holding out hope.

Alright, here’s a trailer we’re much more excited about: Sam Taylor-Wood’s young John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy.” Or were excited anyhow…

Interestingly enough, there’s no Beatles or Lennon music in this one and the first song we hear is Jay Hawkins’ classic, “I Put A Spell On You,” though it does feature voice recordings of Lennon reflecting back on his childhood. But we must say it doesn’t look great and rather much like a conventional melodrama/em0-teeny bopper coming-of-age tale (lots of teen angst in here).

LFF ’09: ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ and ‘Mother’

David Morrissey is one of our favorite actors: his performances in the original “State of Play,” and particularly the “Red Riding” trilogy, are spectacularly good, even if his Hollywood movies haven’t always been great. He also does a huge amount of good for the British film industry, as a patron and a mentor. Unfortunately, one of those things is not his big screen directorial debut, “Don’t Worry About Me.”

Like fellow festival movie “Kicks,” “Don’t Worry About Me” is part of the Digital Departures program, a series of digital features, designed to commemorate Liverpool’s year as the European Capital of Culture.

New Poster & Photos Of Young John Lennon Film, ‘Nowhere Boy’

Who wants to be a gambling man and bet that Sam Taylor-Wood’s young John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy won’t come out in the U.S. in 2009?

The film was picked up for a late 2009 release by the Weinstein Company in March, but with the economic troubles they’ve been having all year and all the release date rearranging and shuffling they’ve been making — “Youth In Revolt,” and “Shanghai” pushed to 2010, the same fates seems to have befallen the long-delayed Ryan Gosling picture, “All Good Things“; “Nine”; and “The Road” switching dates — it seems like a decent bet this one is not going to arrive this year.

Telluride ’09 Review: ‘Red Riding’ Trilogy: Three Of The Best Films Of The Year

Over the weekend, the Telluride Film Festival has seen the U.S. premiere of the “Red Riding” Trilogy, made up of Julian Jarrold’s “1974,” James Marsh’s “1980” and Anand Tucker’s “1983.” We caught up with the films a little while back, and we’re happy to report that the whole endeavor marks easily one of the cinematic highlights of the year.

Adapted from the novels by David Peace (whose “The Damned United” has also recently been adapted for the screen, and will screen at Toronto), “Red Riding” is a James Ellroy-like crime epic set in the Yorkshire region of Northern England, examining police corruption and the very darkest aspects of human nature.

The writer behind, “John Lennon, My Brother,” Geoffrey Giluiano, a Beatleologist who co-wrote the book with the help of Lennon’s maternal half-sister, Julia Baird, wants the young-Lennon biopic, “Nowhere Boy,” stopped, even thought the picture is already a month into shooting in the U.K.

Why? Because Baird went off on her own three years later and wrote, “Imagine This: Growing Up With My Brother John Lennon,” which is what “Control,” writer, Matt Greenhalgh‘s screenplay is based from.

The Weinsteins Pick Up John Lennon Biopic, ‘Nowhere Boy,’ Both McCartney And Lennon Roles Cast

The Weinstien Company picked up the rights to “Nowhere Boy,” the young John Lennon biopic directed by first-time feature filmmaker Sam Taylor-Wood, that already stars Kristen Scott Thomas as his Aunt Mimi, the woman who was strongly opposed to Lennon’s mother lifestyle and ended up raising the lad for the majority of his youth.

The film also stars Aaron Johnson,Thomas Sangster, David Morrissey and Anne-Marie Duff and starts out with Lennon at 15-years of age and ends around the time he meets the Beatles.
