Yesterday, film fans around the world were sad to learn that health concerns were preventing the legendary filmmaker David Lynch from pursuing a new film or TV project. Effectively, if you believed what he was saying, he was forced into retirement. Well, shortly after that, Lynch took to social media to deny he was actually retiring.

In a post on Twitter, David Lynch shared a statement that confirmed that his health issues are very real—a consequence to his cigarette smoking—but he isn’t retiring.

For some filmmakers, such as Quentin Tarantino, the choice to end your career is a decision you make. However, there are other filmmakers where the choice to stop is made for them. That latter case seems to be where filmmaker David Lynch finds himself.

Speaking in an issue of Sight & Sound magazine (via The Independent), David Lynch explained that his career as a filmmaker is seemingly done, as he can’t risk his health any longer.

Keeping up with the subset cult around whispering David Lynch rumors can be a little taxing and trying, but as we know, the filmmaker hasn’t released anything since the transformative “Twin Peaks: The Return” series in 2017. But as it turns out, there appear to be some truths to some of the rumors and speculation circulated over the last five years.

Most of it started when the “Blue Velvet” filmmaker was spotted in the offices at Netflix in 2018, presumably taking some meetings, and things subsequently snowballed.

Now that Denis Villeneuve has proven that “Dune” can be faithfully adapted from its classic source material, film fans are beginning to look back at the earlier attempts with new eyes.
