He was, in many ways, a throwback to the personality-driven character actors of the 1940s; he could have been a member of the Preston Sturges company, alongside Franklin Pangborn or William Demerest.

Conducting a live Emmys telecast during a global pandemic is pretty frivolous. But then again, it’s pretty frivolous every year, so, why not try and have some fun with it? And, at the beginning at least, the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards did a surprisingly good job pulling that off. In other words, it wasn’t a trainwreck.

And according to a new interview with David Letterman, one of those interviews ended up causing Quentin Tarantino to threaten his life.

Speaking on a recent episode of “Desus & Mero,” Letterman recalled a story where he joked about Tarantino, but the filmmaker took it completely the wrong way.

While some may have questioned how wise it has been for Casey Affleck to reveal, just as “I’m Still Here” is rolling out across the country, that it was all an elaborate Andy Kaufman-esque stunt, it may be turn out to be the best publicity the film has received yet. And with Joaquin Phoenix returning to the “Late Show With David Letterman” last night following his carefully orchestrated meltdown 18 months ago, suddenly the actor’s transformation looks less like a prank and more like the stuff of Best Actor performances.

Titans will clash once again. Arguably the most notorious and certainly most well-known moment of Joaquin Phoenix’s lost years often painfully chronicled in the new Casey Affleck-directed documentary, “I’m Still Here” is the actor’s mumbly and incoherent appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in February of 2009 (read our review of the film here).

Letterman basically handed Phoenix his ass for not being mentally present (“Sorry, you couldn’t be here Joaquin”), but there will be a take two.

We have to admit, we sort of forgot about this project and pretty much figured it would never see the light of day, but Deadline reports that Casey Affleck’s gestating mockumentary on Joaquin Phoenix is now being shown to buyers.

In case your memory needs refreshing, Joaquin Phoenix appeared to go off the deep end just prior to doing press rounds for what he called his “last movie,” “Two Lovers.” Phoenix grew a cult-leader style beard, wore dark sunglasses everywhere and said he was embarking on a hip-hop career and had Casey Affleck filming what was supposed to be his dramatic rise to the top.

The forthcoming “Ghostbusters 3” sequel/reboot has hit a major road bump, as Vulture reports that Columbia Pictures wants a younger talent in the director’s chair instead of series director to date, Ivan Reitman.

As has been previously reported, the original Ghostbusters gang would return for this film, but would train a new generation of ghost hunters, presumably setting up the first film in a newly revitalized franchise. Unfortunately, Columbia is being forced to reckon with a deal struck with Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis that gives them considerable veto power over many of the major creative aspects of the production.

Like it or not (and many people don’t, but we caught up with it recently, and it played much better on second viewing), “Funny People” is probably near the top of the list of movies made about stand-up comedy – it just seems to be a hard thing to capture on film, even for the few that have tried. Someone else is taking a stab though, in the form of Tom Hanks, who’s already made one attempt in the form of “Punchline.”

According to the usually-ahead-of-the-curve Pajiba, Hanks’ Playtone Productions is developing a film based on the book “I’m Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-up Comedy’s Golden Era,” by author William Knoedelseder, which focuses on The Comedy Store in LA around 1978, and its founder Mitzi Shore (who is the mother of faded comedy idiot Pauly Shore).

You’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it again, but it’s always interesting to hear it through the man’s (Mickey Rourke’s) voice rather than just in quotes. All journalism and (and especially blogging) would be radically different if every quote you read could be viewed and heard, cause tone is at least 50% of every thing that comes out anyone’s mouth.

Looks like Crispin Glover has had another freakout, albiet a slightly milder one it seems.

Glover was in Phoenix promoting his “deeply weird art film “What Is It?,” which features actors afflicted with Down syndrome, naked chicks, swastikas, and a butt-load of dead snails.” [full disclosure, we sadly have not seen this yet, but were dying to do so when it first came out in 2005).

Glover’s eccentric behavior and odd demands for being paid in cash at the end of the evening for every appearance started to grate on the mom n’ pop indie art house that was putting on his film.
