The film, though set in the mid-nineties, may very well have the most apt title for our insane/bewildering real-life present. Our original review from Rotterdam found it to be something of a solid calling card for debut feature filmmaker Kevin Phillips, if not a wholly successful effort.

Of course you did, since it’s all everyone can talk about in the movie world. That is completely understandable, of course, given the monumental victory by “Moonlight” in the top category, and the immense confusion and awkwardness of the mistake on live television.

But now that March is upon us and spring is not far away, we wish to remind you that 2017 at the movies is in full swing, with a wide array of new releases for any taste or viewing habit.

His debut, “Pavilion“, is a coming-of age statement and his follow up, “Memphis”, is a poetically fragmented look at a musician’s drifting life. In his latest movie, “Dark Night,” Sutton continues to prove he’s one of the most fascinating, on-the-rise indie filmmakers working today.

Thought-provoking and unsettling, “Dark Night” is loosely based on “The Dark Knight Rises” movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado in 2014.

In an unnamed U.S. suburban town, but somewhere clearly akin to a hellish limbo like South Florida, disparate people live their lives with varying degrees of duress, strain and disappointment. Glimpsed in lyrical fragments, slowly revealed over time, “Dark Night” unveils its seemingly random, unconnected cast of characters with a dispassionate lens. There’s a loner teenage outcast who plays too many video games and doesn’t have any IRL friends, there’s a latch-key kid skateboarder on the fringes of parental guidance, a disaffected Iraq War veteran struggling to bond with his family and grappling with PTSD, a social-media obsessed would-be model, a twitchy drifter, an immigrant trying not to stand out, and many more, often moody, troubled or under emotional and financial desperation.

Now, it’s finally headed to arthouses, and it’s one not to miss.
