It appears his son has convinced him to change that stance.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the most acclaimed American directors working today. Five of the eight feature films that he’s written and directed have been nominated for Oscars, with eight total nominations. But even though he’s received an incredible amount of acclaim over his career, the high-point of his filmmaking is arguably 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.” And in a new retrospective over at Vanity Fair, the origin of the film’s most iconic scene gets revealed.

That’s definitely not going out on a limb to say, at all. From the amazing acting by Daniel Day-Lewis (in his final performance, purportedly) to the incredible costume design (which won Mark Bridges an Oscar, and perhaps a jet ski?), the film is truly a masterpiece.

As audiences soon realized, the film sure does love a good breakfast scene, including several over the course of the run-time. But it’s those scenes that really capture what makes “The Phantom Thread” one of the best films of the last year.

The actor’s rigorous method approach — which has generally seen him learn everything about the role he’s playing while taking on new skills and staying in character at all times on set — can make him a force to be reckoned with to those who are unprepared. So one might imagine that “Phantom Thread” star Vicky Krieps, largely unknown before her role in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s film, might have been uncertain as to how to navigate her titanic co-star.

Yesterday afternoon, the filmmaker continued his “Phantom Thread” promotional run with an absolutely terrific stint answering questions on Twitter through the film’s social media account. Both hilarious and illuminating, the whole thing is worth scrolling through, but we’ve got the highlight below.

He apprenticed with an actual butcher for his role as Bill “The Butcher” in “Gangs of New York“; he was fully in character, both on and off-screen, as Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln“; he learned to build canoes, lived with Native Americans, learned to track and skin animals for his role in “The Last Of The Mohicans“; he refused to use his hands, only using his feet to complete daily tasks, for his role as cerebral palsy-inflicted, celebrated painter Christie Brown in “My Left Foot“; he learned to speak Czech for “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” oh, and lest we forget, he spent nights in jail, was asked to be verbally abused by prisoners, and lost 50 pounds to play an Irish prisoner in “In The Name of the Father.” Yikes, and that’s not even the half of it.

A looming, legendary figure in cinema, whose stature has cemented after five decades of work as one of the greatest actors in the world, and one of all the all-time greats – period – up there with the likes of Laurence Olivier and Marlon Brando. Known for his all-consuming method approach, which includes staying in character the entire time during the production of a film, like all mysterious figures who are semi-recluse —he doesn’t give a lot of interviews, he goes years in between films and once retired to become a cobbler—everyone seemingly wants a piece of Day-Lewis.

The days of high speed, Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman-indebted movies are long gone and what has emerged is something more true to himself, more akin to the director’s personality — unhurried, laconic and chilled out. His latest picture, the ravishing “Phantom Thread,” is another one of his latter day pictures examining the inscrutable mysteries of human behavior and in particular, the crazy, strange designs behind love.

The profile by Lynn Hirschberg about Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “There Will Be Blood” revealed that during the shoot, the original actor slated to play Eli Sunday was fired, leading to Paul Dano having to double his work as both Paul and Eli Sunday.

It’s true that Anderson has compared his new film “Phantom Thread” to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca”; it’s also true that the comparison clicks. But “Phantom Thread” has just as much in common with “Rebecca” as with Jacques Rivette’s recently restored “La Belle Noiseuse,” a movie dedicated to the painstaking process of creating art.

That’s right, earlier this year, the acclaimed thespian announced his retirement from acting. We’ve been used to long stretches of absence by Day-Lewis, but it sounds like this time it’s for good. But even getting the actor — whose lsat screen role was five years ago in Steven Spielberg‘s “Lincoln” — to sign up for the project proved a bit daunting.

And, no, Daniel Day-Lewis was not on hand (New York audiences will be the lucky ones for that experience).

From exploring the drug and sex-filled world of 1970s Los Angeles in “Boogie Nights,” to examining the prolonged desire for fulfillment through one lonely man in the vastly underappreciated “Punch-Drunk Love” – and even making a tale of the overwhelming power of greed set near an oil rig at the turn of the 20th century in the Academy-Award winning “There Will Be Blood,” Anderson has proven that no matter the shifting trends in genre, he will make whatever film he wants, whenever he wants.

We haven’t seen Day-Lewis since he won the Oscar for his title role in “Lincoln” and supposedly the upcoming “Phantom Thread” will be his last ever film role. To be fair, he’s claimed this before, in the ’90s when he disappeared and reappeared as a cobbler in Italy, but this time actually feels final and it is true that the three-time Best Actor winner has little left to prove.

The answer is, quite obviously, no. Despite the mixed reaction his last movie, “Inherent Vice,” received back in October of 2014, Anderson is still viewed as one of the greatest working filmmakers in the world today. “The Phantom Thread” reteams him with the newly retired “There Will Be Blood” star Daniel Day-Lewis.
