Sometimes. But if you’ve ever wanted to know how much Netflix cares about a certain piece of content, just look at “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and the reams of promotion they’ve put behind the series, including this third and final trailer.

Night Shyamalan, the film never took off nor captured the spirit of the “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” animated series from Nickelodeon which has become a cult classic for specific audiences who grew up with it. After many years of development, Netflix has finally turned “Avatar: The Last Airbender” into an epic live-action fantasy series that fans are already clamoring about.

Novak’s new FX anthology series is essential to understanding its approach, and also its failure. One can easily picture a whiteboard in a writer’s room consisting of as many shocking “premises” as possible, ways to grab viewers in the first two minutes. There were probably phrases like “Butt Plug,” “Sex Tape,” and “Mass Shootings.” And every episode of “The Premise” does start with a hook.

Much like the desert in Westerns, the journey through space is a deeply intimate and human one, often an exploration of the soul and the human condition when at its best. The Netflix drama “Stowaway” grapples with some of these ideas and questions of morality when a group of astronauts travel from Earth to Mars on a two-year voyage.

It’s a white-knuckle film despite its modest budget and barebones cast. And despite the expansive polar landscape, it’s also tense and claustrophobic and taps into the primal themes of survival at the brink of death.

Penna looks up to something similar in his next film, “Stowaway.” Instead of the far north’s barren chill, this time, Penna plunges his small cast into another vast and desolate landscape: outer space.
