‘Patience’: Charlie McDowell Directing Adaptation of Graphic Novel For Focus Features

Though film adaptations of comic book and graphic novel are usually associated with superhero films, there has been a wide variety of comic-to-film adaptations, from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” to “My Friend Dahmer.” Now, Focus Features is entering the graphic novel game with a film adaptation of “Patience,” with Charlie McDowell set to direct.

Deadline has the scoop on “Patience,” reporting that the director of “The Discovery” and “The One I Love,” Charlie McDowell, will take directorial duties for the film adaptation of Daniel Clowes‘ graphic novel.

Yesterday, we brought some news from a panel at SXSW with director Michel Gondry, who provided some updates on the status of his animated project “Megalomania,” which is set to feature the voices of Steve Buscemi, Seth Rogen and Juliette Lewis. We caught up with Gondry in a one-to-one interview later in the day, spoke to him about this new documentary, “A Thorn In The Heart” (more on that later) and we picked up a few more tidbits on some of the French auteur’s future projects.

Yes, Steve Buscemi, Michel Gondry’s Son’s Animated Film, ‘Megalomania’ Still Moving Forward, Thanks

Late last week we spoke to Steve Buscemi at a junket for the rather ungood (to put it nicely), “Saint John of Las Vegas,” which the actor also executive produced.

Since that picture left a lot to be desired, when we cornered the actor, we decided to ask him about Paul Gondry’s (yes, Michel Gondry’s son), animated featured called “Megalomania,” which Buscemi was going to voice (the lead character) and would be written by Daniel Clowes — the creator of alt-comics “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential” (he also wrote the screenplays for their feature-length adaptations; Clowes was also supposed to pen Gondry’s “Master Of Space And Time” sci-fi adaptation, but that seems to have gone long-dormant).

Way back when (October 2007), fanciful French director Michel Gondry revealed he was making a animated film with his son Paul.

“We’re translating our relationship into a futuristic story with a dictator and a rebel,” he explained of the film’s rudimentary outline. “He’s the dictator in the story [and] it will be based on [his] art.” /Film also noted that Daniel Clowes, the creator of alt-comics “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential” (he also wrote the screenplays for their feature-length adaptations) would be penning the script.

Michel Gondry Directed A ‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Episode; Great, Now Please Make ‘Master of Space & Time’

What the hell has Michel Gondry been up to besides releasing a book and not making the long-awaited “Master Of Space And Time,” with “Ghost World” author Daniel Clowes handling writing chores? (note: Dave Chapelle is rumored to be joining Jack Black in the cast should it ever get off the ground – maybe 2011 as IMDB suggests?). Apparently he’s been directing or directed one episode of the HBO hipster comedy, “Flight Of The Conchords.” Here’s a clip with a musical number.

Michel Gondry’s New Magical Motorola Commercial

It’s nice to see someone like Michel Gondry constantly using commercials to further is art (Gondry typically uses commercial opportunities, much like videos as short-form experiments that inform his feature work). The spot is typically inventive Gondry and uses a seeming mix of media, computer animation, regular stop-motion animation and the French director’s patented in-camera optical tricks. The ad also has it’s own microsite.

Having finished “Be Kind Rewind,” which is due in early 2008, Gondry has apparently already moved on to working on his next feature – the much-discussed and much-delayed – “Master Of Space And Time,” an adaptation of the Rudy Rucker book with screenwriter Daniel Clowes (the graphic novelist behind “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential.”)

Gondry’s been talking about ‘Space And Time’ since at least 2002, so let’s hope he finally gets it off the ground.
