Employing dreary aesthetics, quirky-bordering-on-obnoxious music and initially amusing characters who soon wear out their welcome, Icelandic director Dagur Kári’s English-language debut, “The Good Heart” starts off as a compelling take on the familiar father/son strangers-who-better-each-other dynamic, but eventually devolves into tired and tedious clichés.

The film is a reunion of sorts for Paul Dano and Brian Cox who first worked together on the controversial 1999 film “L.I.E.” which featured a then 15-year old Dano as a young boy who befriends an oddly kind pedophile (Cox).

At last September’s Toronto Film Festival, we were intrigued by Icelandic filmmaker Dagur Kári’s American debut (and third feature overall) “The Good Heart” and had hoped that the film would get some sort of distribution with its cast (Paul Dano and Brian Cox leading) and those involved. Today, Vulture not only premiered a poster for the film, but also revealed that it will be released by Magnolia Pictures theatrically on April 30th and on their Video-On-Demand platform on April 2nd.

Every year at the Toronto Int. Film Festival there’s always a good little indie that comes out of nowhere — and sadly some of them never seem to see the light of day, much like “$5 A Day” with Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Walken from ’08.

Hopefully, one of these indies that doesn’t go the way of the dodo, is a picture called, “Good Heart.” Now we have no way of knowing whether it’s good or not, but it does star the great Brian Cox and Paul Dano.
