Nearly 30 years after the 1982 “Tron” movie—a technical marvel for its time—the belated sequel from director Joseph Kosinski, “Tron: Legacy,” was released, featuring a classic soundtrack from Daft Punk, CGI-de-aging and dozens of other cutting edge VFX. Fans loved this new version, but the expensive film mostly flopped at the box-office, leaving ‘Legacy’ to live on as yet another cult film in the “Tron” franchise history.

Sure, much of his recent work hasn’t quite lived up to the classics of his past, including “Suspiria,” “Deep Red,” and “Inferno,” but no matter what, if Argento releases a new film, there are legions of fans that will line up to view it. And for his next film, “Black Glasses,” it appears that he’s going to entice many more fans by teaming up with Daft Punk for the film’s music.

It’s an essential part of his filmmaking style. He loves to push boundaries and, for lack of a better word, torture his audiences. What he isn’t known for is having rocking soundtracks in his films. Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, who previously worked with Noé on “Irreversible” and “Enter the Void,” has contributed an original song to the director’s new film “Climax,” titled “Sangria.” Also on the soundtrack of “Climax” is his unreleased song “What to Do” and Daft Punk’s “Rollin’ and Scratchin’.”

Music plays a huge role in “Climax.” The film follows an urban dance troupe and is said to include some of the most stylish filmmaking of the entire festival, where he shows the group of dancers rehearse and perform routines with the pulsing electronic music in the background.

Well, here we are now, so quit your bellyaching. Of course, eagle-eyed observers may smell a rat: why was our Best Soundtracks list only 25 strong while this is one is twice as long? Well, simply put, as much as we appreciate the fine art of curation and understand how much a well-chosen pre-existing track can enhance the experience of a film and open up new avenues of music for us to explore, the even finer art of scoring —that is, creating music specifically tailored to the rhythms and cues of the film in question— is closer to our hearts.

Is this the year the Academy will recognize electronica in their soundtrack nominations? We’re not gonna hold our breath, but with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross delivering the goods for “The Social Network” and the brief snippets — including an official ninety second preview which you can listen to below — from Daft Punk’s forthcoming work on “Tron: Legacy” sounding ace, it looks like a banner year for bloops and bleeps in film scores.

In the latest part of Disney’s blitzkrieg of a marketing campaign for the film, we now have our first look at Daft Punk in the film and….they look like Daft Punk.

Yes, “Tron Legacy” sure does look pretty. But even more exciting than light cycles zipping around a synthetic world and the inevitable climactic battle between Young Bridges and Old Bridges, the thing we’ve been most pumped about is French electro duo Daft Punk’s pulse-pounding original score.

Last week in the Comic-Con milieu, a few minutes of mostly orchestral music popped up on the movie’s official website. The music was pretty stunning and involved some big “movie music” moments but not much in the way of the slinky beats that Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Cristo are known for.

Yesterday brought some new images from Disney’s new 3D tentpole hope, “Tron: Legacy,” as well as the news, from Empire Magazine’s comprehensive new cover story on the movie, that director Joseph Kosinski, a protege of David Fincher, had been using his mentor as a sounding board for the movie. We’ve finally delved into the article ourselves, and we’ve found a few more intriguing details on the picture, more specifically, on Daft Punk’s score to the movie.

According to Amazon (via Stitch and /Film), the soundtrack to “Tron Legacy,” composed by French dance duo Daft Punk, will hit shelves and digital outlets on November 23, 2010.

That’s about a month before the film hits theaters on December 17th, but Amazon dates this far out? Don’t be completely surprised if that date is changed. It does feel early, but then again, this could be a bonafide Daft Punk release that merits its own early release.

“Tron: Legacy” will be featured at this year’s Comic-Con, along with a panel featuring director Joe Kosinski and actors Jeff Bridges, Garrett Helund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner. Comedian Patton Oswalt will moderate, so hopefully these guys won’t take themselves too seriously. There are also said to be surprise guests. Daft Punk composed the music of the film. Hopefully cosplayers can comprehend how blessed they truly are. Only because Daft Punk are reclusive and completely incredible.

One of our most anticipated soundtracks of the year (we could kinda care less about the movie, really) is that for “Tron: Legacy,” which has been written (and from the sounds of it, already completed) by amazing French electro superstars Daft Punk. The film, a belated sequel to the fondly-remembered-by-those-who’ve-forgotten-how-bad-it is 1982 original, isn’t due for release until December this year, but purported tracks from the band’s work for it leaked as early as last summer, and another now seems to have hit the Internet.

— A new poster and image for “Tron Legacy” has been unveiled. Starring Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges, the film will center on the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn as he looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Geeks will go crazy December 2010 while everyone else will be satisfied when the soundtrack to the film by Daft Punk is released.

Michael Sheen’s previously rumored role in “Tron Legacy” has now been confirmed by Disney’s own Twitter page.

Sheen had teased fans about the role via his own twitter page noting that he was set to play an antagonist in a film that was “in fact not a person at all.” Further questioning and answering between fans and Sheen eventually deducted that it was the “Tron” sequel but, until today, no official word had been put out.

According to a post on electronic music magazine URB’s website, electro-bot duo Daft Punk have recorded a staggering 24 tracks for their “Tron Legacy” score. This poses some interesting questions as it related to film music publishing.

Briefly: the reason that scores you buy on CD (or on the ITunes music store) are so much shorter than the actual, you know, movie, is because for every 45 minutes of recorded music that they release, they have to pay every member of the orchestra.

So there was a Comic-Con related party last night for “Tron Legacy,” at a place called Flynn’s Arcade, but apparently there was a big secret in store for Con-goers, which was an early sneak-peak at light cycles and whatnot from the new “Tron” movie.

Can’t say the Playlist EIC cares much for “Tron” frankly (other members clearly disagree, but then again, they’re not writing this are they…), but more of interest it what appears and sounds like the new Daft Punk score written for the film.

“Tron 2,” now called… wait for it…. “Tron Legacy,” director Joseph Kosinski had a “mysterious pancake breakfast in L.A.,” when he first met with Daft Punk to discuss the French electronic dance duo scoring his sequel (we suppose this is now official confirmation).

Apparently they were wearing their helmets at said breakfast, which must have been extremely awkward and surely difficult where eating and drinking is concerned (maybe they just spill mimosas over their head and they than utter, “ahhhhhh.”

“Asked if they [would] tour in support of the soundtrack, Kosinski said there would definitely be Daft Punk Tron-themed events on the horizon,” writes Movieline, who are down at Comic-Con at the moment.
