Remember Vincent Gallo? After a steady career acting, Gallo really broke out in 1998 with the release of his indie darling, “Buffalo ‘66.” Five years later, he returned with another directorial effort, the controversial drama, “The Brown Bunny.” But since then, he’s been a bit under the radar, with smaller acting roles and lesser-known directorial gigs. Well, it appears the actor-filmmaker is set to star in his most high-profile film in a decade, “Shut In,” but the feature is already bound to be controversial, well before it hits theaters.

In an age where studio blockbusters seem more passive and indistinct than ever, “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” the undemanded-but-nevertheless-vibrantly-provided sequel to 2002’s mediocre “xXx,” sticks out like a sore thumb. Not necessarily because it’s good, or maybe even halfway decent. No, because it’s so brazenly, bewilderingly proud of itself and its debauchery. As far as unnecessary, unpunctual follow-ups go, star/producer Vin Diesel’s return to the action franchise he discarded the decade prior is a gleefully, almost manically absurdist piece of work.

We live in an age where studios are looking to forever expand their franchises outward, and the next big step will be crossover movies. Paramount is certainly getting prepared, setting the wheels in motion last year on a Hasbro cinematic universe that will include G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionairies, M.A.S.K., and ROM in a series of interconnected movies. However, the studio’s big blockbuster baby remains “Transformers,” which is getting another installment, with plans for more sequels and spinoffs down the road.

While Vin Diesel shows his more sensitive side in the upcoming “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” let’s face it, his core audience generally prefers to watch him do ridiculously stupid stunts in high calorie blockbusters that don’t make you think too much. And “xXx: Return Of Xander Cage” should fit that bill quite nicely.

Whether or not people actually want another ‘xXx’ movie remains to be seen, but the ensemble seems to be crafted to appeal to every worldwide market possible, with Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Toni Collette, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Tony Jaa, Samuel L.
