William Hurt To Star In Curtis Hanson’s Financial Crisis Drama ‘Too Big To Fail’ For HBO

It’s official: the financial crisis is the new Iraq war. With documentaries and features lining up about the collapse of Wall Street, the issue is the latest trend to get projects greenlit around Hollywood.

The latest, “Too Big To Fail,” will find Curtis Hanson (“L.A. Confidential,” “Wonder Boys”) directing William Hurt in “a dissection of the 2008 financial crisis and the power brokers who decided the fate of the world’s economy as the system teetered on collapse.” Hurt will play Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

Curtis Hanson To Helm Jay Moriarty Biopic, Sean Penn Attached To Star

“L.A. Confidential” director Curtis Hanson is set to helm a biopic of late surfer Jay Moriarty with Sean Penn in talks to join the project.

The film is Hanson’s first effort since 2007’s “Lucky You” and will follow the adventures of Moriarty, an all around accomplished surfer, renowned for his abilities on the longboard and exploits with big waves.

The Santa Cruz native found his calling in the world of surfing at a young age and soon flourished with the guidance of local elder Hesson, the role Penn is being lined up to play.

We don’t know a SINGLE person who’s seen “Lucky You,” the last film from Curtis Hanson. Hanson’s a journeyman-type who, in an alternate world, had a career not unlike Stephen Soderbergh’s. His poker drama was shelved forever only to be counter-programmed against “Spider-Man 3” in a world where Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore were no longer realistically considered leading actors. Surely the film’s not that bad, right? Robert Duvall plays Bana’s father, and the movie’s got a supporting turn from Robert Downey Jr.
