Cartoonist Dan Clowes is responsible for some of the best graphic novels and short comics stories of the past 25 years, two of which — “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential” —  ave been made into movies. But it’s his book “Wilson” that best represents his work as a whole. A character sketch about a chatty, reactionary misanthrope, “Wilson” is structured as a series of one-page comic strips, drawn in a variety of styles, which combine to tell a loose story.

It’s been a bit of journey for “Wilson” to the big screen. Originally developed as a project for Alexander Payne, the director eventually moved on with Craig Johnson (“The Skeleton Twins“) stepping in. Woody Harrelson lined up the lead role, and now Daniel Clowes‘s acclaimed comic is coming to life in what looks like a great part for the actor to play.

The fall film schedule is starting to take shape. Last night, Paramount confirmed the new title of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi pic “Arrival” with Amy Adams and its release date (November 11th), and this morning, Damien Chazelle’s musical “La La Land” was unveiled as the Venice Film Festival opener.
