Women: don’t fuck Vince Vaughn. Men: don’t tell Vince Vaughn you’re fucking anyone. It’s odd that considering Hollywood’s most forceful comedic personalities, the most compelling body of work not from a formal aesthetic but a thematic one belongs to Vince Vaughn. Through “The Break-Up” to “Couples Retreat,” no other onscreen comedic persona has been as obsessed with infidelity as Vaughn, who usually has a generous impact on the content of the for-hire material he gets involved with.

‘Couples Retreat’ Poster Outrage?

There seems to be a lot of blogger outrage about the fact that the African American actors in “Couples Retreat,” Faizon Love and Kali Hawk (image via Jeff Wells) have been photoshopped out of the U.K. version of the film’s poster (see version on the left).

Uhh, but it was ok that Love and Hawk were just a marginalized, almost non-existent, throw-away blip on the original version, right? Where was the outrage about that?

Weekend Box Office- No One Gives A Shit About ‘A Christmas Carol’ In November

Well, ok, that’s quite the misleading headline, no? Some people cared. More than ten. Less than twenty. Needless to say, “A Christmas Carol” was not the knockout punch Disney was expecting, its numbers coming in way below the $40 million predictions, but this is still Robert Zemeckis‘ biggest mo-cap opener to date. His other holiday bonanza “The Polar Express” did $23 million in its opening frame and went on to do $180 by playing throughout the holiday season, so can “Christmas Carol,” with its soul-defeating ugliness and ludicrous pratfalls, do the same?

Weekend Box-Office: ‘Activity’ For Paramount Horror Is Abnormally Good

Promotions will undoubtedly be handed out all over Paramount’s marketing department on Monday after the no-budget, no-stars horror flick “Paranormal Activity” vaulted from the 5th spot to #1 this weekend. Earning an astonishing $22 million dollars, on just under 2000 screens, the film has taken in a whopping $62 million at the box office so far. Clearly, the viral marketing is working and word-of-mouth on this is strong as audiences are lining up in droves to get their Halloween fix.

Weekend Box-Office: The ‘Wild Things’ Rumpus Bests The Competition, ‘Paranormal Activity’ Roll-Out Plan Works

With an almost $12 million dollar haul on Friday night, Spike Jonze’s divisive adaptation of “Where The Wild Things Are” (critics either seemed to looove it or sneer in disdain at its lack of narrative and drive) the film seem poised to outdo its forecasted $25 million dollar weekend and it did taking in an impressive $32.7 million this weekend. The picture, with reshoot costs north of $80 million (estimates are around $100 million noting included promotions and advertising), so it has a long, long way to go before it becomes profitable, let alone break even.

Weekend Box Office- Taste Goes On A ‘Couples Retreat,’ ‘Paranormal Activity’ Scores High

A lot of the people defended their decision to go see “Couples Retreat,” and later thoughtlessly enjoyed it, because they go to the movies, in their words, “to be entertained.” Which makes it seem as if if YOU didn’t enjoy, or want to enjoy, spending $12 for Vince Vaughn and friends’ summer vacation on the studio dime because you obviously go to the movies for reasons other than enjoying yourself- ritualistic torture, we suppose. The people who say these things, it must be said, should be dragged out onto the street and shot like dogs, and their children should be forced to climb The Holy Mountain.

No, given the light vanilla flavorings of the “Couples Retreat” trailer, one can’t really be surprised that this rom com is an intolerable mish-mash of half-written and halfhearted gags, but christ. With a cast full of improv-heavy riffers like Vincent Vaughn, Jon Favreau and Jason Bateman (all part of the “The Break-Up” crew, an underrated little comedy of that ilk) one would hope that asking for a few, mildly diverting moments wouldn’t be too much to ask.

In Theaters: ‘Couples Retreat,’ ‘An Education,’ ‘Bronson’

With only one film out in wide release, it’s a no-man’s land at the box office this weekend. If you don’t live in a city with a decent art-house option, maybe “The Informant” is still playing? Either way, “Couple Retreat” is going to have a hard time knocking “Zombieland,” from the top of the box-office wethinks. And with good reason, the former is fucking terrible and everyone involved should be embarrassed.

In Wide Release: Ralphie from “A Christmas Story,” Peter Billingsley, finds his way to the director’s chair this week with “Couples Retreat.” The film follows four Midwestern couples who travel to a tropical resort to get help for their troubled marriages.

Struggling Universal Sends Junketeers To Bora Bora For ‘Couples Retreat’: Is This Sound Business?

In the same week that we get the news that that the FTC wants bloggers to disclose who pays them (uhh, wtf??) to review products, we are also getting coverage coming from the “Couples Retreat” press junket Universal hosted in… Bora Bora.

Yes, the struggling company decided to use the age-old “throw money at the problem” technique when it comes to their looks-to-be-a-stinker couples comedy opening this weekend, and flew journalists and bloggers to the South Pacific for a tropical vacay with celebrities, hoping to possibly distract them from how bad the movie looks to be (our “friend” has seen it and describes it as an “abominable piece of shit”).

Entertainment Weekly has unveiled their “Fall Movies We Can’t Wait To See” photo feature and of course it comes with a plethora of new images and first looks at the films under that umbrella.

First up is Spike Jonze’s much-anticipated “Where The Wild Things Are” with a look at lead Max (coincidentally played by Max Records) with two of the titular Wild Things and Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” with Saoirse Ronan who plays protagonist Susie Salmon.

Vince Vaugh and Jon Favreau’s belated re-teaming with their production pal, Peter Billingsley (the latter two co-produced the show “Dinner For Five” on IFC before they were “Iron Man”-sized superstars) has arrived in the form of the upcoming romantic comedy, “Couples Retreat.”

Billingsley (who always makes cameos in Favreau and Vaughn films like “Elf” and “The Break-Up”) make his directorial debut with a story essentially about four couple who take off on a tropical island resort.

A.R. Rahman In For ‘Couples Retreat’ Score

Word on the street (and the street meaning the One India blog) is that Indian composer A.R. Rahman, who recently won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his “Slumdog Millionaire” score, has signed on to compose the score for “Couples Retreat,” which we previously reported will be the next Jon Favreau/Vince Vaughn/Peter Billingsley boys club comedy. We’re hoping it’ll be better than “Four Christmases,” funnier than “The Break-Up” and less costume-y than “Iron Man.” With at least one film location set for Bora Bora, we’re guessing they’ll direct Rahman to Caribbean his traditional Bollywood style up.

Monday morning and we’re having a lot of serious trouble finding the interest to blog about anything in full.

To no one’s surprise we’re sure, “High School Musical 3” topped the box-office this weekend with a $42 million cume. The insipid horror franchise, “Saw V” came in second with $30.5 million. The only newly released film to make a dent in the box-office was “Pride and Glory,” which came in at number 5 with $6.3 million.

Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis & Malin Akerman Join Favreau/Vaughn Frat-Pack Film ‘Couples Retreat’

If you ever watched the underrated (and sorely missed) IFC show “Dinner For Five,” you know the show was essentially the playground for Jon Favreau’s post-“Swingers” posse. Favreau was the host, Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from “A Christmas Story”) was the producer and regulars on the show were pals Vince Vaughn and comedian Faizon Love.

The members of this unofficial crew have all worked together at various times, perhaps most recently on “The Break-Up,” which added Jason Bateman to the crew.
