It’s sort of remarkable, the ways that animation on the big screen has changed in the past two decades or so. In the early ’90s, the game was pretty much entirely owned by Disney’s hand-drawn animated fairy tales, which were hugely successful but almost entirely seen as kids’ stuff, with the occasional Don Bluth or Ralph Bakshi effort winning some eyes but not really competing; and the beginning of an interesting scene in Japan that largely failed to crossover to mainstream audiences stateside.

Phil Lord Dishes On ‘R-Rated Crazy Action Movie’ Version Of ’21 Jump Street’

Slowly but surely, Hollywood is doing their part to de-ghettoize animation and cartoon artists. Maybe it’s the fact that most movies, with thick, artificial 3D transfers and excessive computer effects are in themselves animated films, but in some cases, it has to do with the artistry, as Pixar craftsmen Brad Bird and Andrew Stanton are both behind the camera for anticipated live-action tentpoles “Mission: Impossible IV” and “John Carter Of Mars” respectively.

It looks like Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the latest to benefit from this enhanced exposure.

After the fairly disastrous box-office summer so far, there were reports that desperate studio executives were calling agencies, clamoring for original material. Had the era of turning any old recognizable property, from “Monopoly” to “The Smurfs,” into half-assed movies come to an end? Yeah, right.

Warner Bros have been developing a “Lego” movie for some time now; it even made our list of the Dumbest Movie Projects Announced In 2009 (placing above “Stretch Armstrong,” but below “View-Master”).

‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Pickles’ On The Way?

Rumors are circulating that a sequel to box-office hit “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” is in the works. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, currently working on Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” are also expected to return to the helm. Based on the popular children’s book “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs” was a somewhat of a surprise box office hit, doubling its budget by bringing in $234 million worldwide haul and as well as spawning a fairly successful video game, spanning all three major gaming systems.

Jonah Hill Says ’21 Jump Street’ Remake Will Shoot This Year

Jonah Hill talked to Coming Soon about his upcoming reboot of cops-go-undercover-in-high-school TV show “21 Jump Street,” which recently added directors in the shape of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were behind the excellent “Cloudy With Chance of Meatballs.”

Despite Hill’s presence as writer/producer/star, the project will apparently play it fairly straight.

“It’s a comedy with really cool action. We’re not doing something serious like “Miami Vice.” But it’s not a parody.

Weekend Box-Office: The ‘Wild Things’ Rumpus Bests The Competition, ‘Paranormal Activity’ Roll-Out Plan Works

With an almost $12 million dollar haul on Friday night, Spike Jonze’s divisive adaptation of “Where The Wild Things Are” (critics either seemed to looove it or sneer in disdain at its lack of narrative and drive) the film seem poised to outdo its forecasted $25 million dollar weekend and it did taking in an impressive $32.7 million this weekend. The picture, with reshoot costs north of $80 million (estimates are around $100 million noting included promotions and advertising), so it has a long, long way to go before it becomes profitable, let alone break even.

Weekend Box Office- ‘Cloudy’ Weathers Hailstorm Of Flops

Not much competition for the top this week, as “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” ruled the roost once again. Exit polling showed that kids enjoyed watching large cartoon things fall from the sky and land on people in 3D, while adults responded to the fact that their kids wanted to see this. The $100 number is being thrown around as far as budget, but we find it hard to believe Sony didn’t scrimp by with a much lower cost.

Weekend Box Office- Season Gets ‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,’ ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Goes Untouched

Slow goings at the box office this weekend. We blame the baseball season, since it’s obviously heating up and- oh, wait, the season’s pretty well decided. Well, people are upset about the recession, right? Which explains why “Transformers” only made $400 mi- well, ok, got us there. How about… there’s nothing remotely exciting enough to see? The number one movie is the most reliable of subgenres, the CG-toon “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.” Its debut was much softer than others of its ilk (particularly the recent “Ice Age” installment, which recently became the third highest grossing film of all time outside of America- spittake), and the numbers were definitely goosed by the 3D showings.

Mid-September and fall is looking up. After a couple of dreadful weeks of cringe-worthy options, the multiplex has become a bit less frightening. Get out there and show your support for good work, so the dry spells won’t last this long in the future. We can only hope, right?

In Wide Release: The most notable release this week has got to be Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant.” We’ve been excited to see him get back to the quality and stylish comedy of “Out of Sight” or the “Ocean’s” movies and he has certainly delivered.

So much for no ComicCon coverage, but this is too easy. EW has a bunch of first looks, or relative first looks in some cases of films that will make a splash at ComicCon including, “Iron Man 2,” (a better look at that Robert Downey Jr./ Tony Stark racing driver suit image), Tim Burton’s 3D “Alice In Wonderland,” and his produced animated film, “Plan 9,” and pics of “Pandorum” starring Dennis Quaid, kid zombies from “Zombieland,” “Paper Heart,” starring Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera, Park Chan Wook’s “Thirst,” and the animated “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,” which will include the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Andy Samberg.

Former Devo Frontman Mark Mothersbaugh To ‘Whip It!’; Write Score For New Ellen Page/Drew Barrymore Comedy; Nashville Singer Landon Pigg Plays BF

We haven’t followed the Drew Barrymore-directed/ Ellen Page-starring roller derby comedy “Whip It!” too closely for many reasons.

1) Barrymore is directing (yikes) and 2) the IMDB synopsis is: “In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.”

Now, dunno about you, but Ellen Page and “indie-rock loving misfit” sounds potentially abortion-worthy (pardon the pun) and drums up the worst parts of “Juno,” which in of itself is a good film, but it had some cringe-inducing parts and that idea (Page and indie-rock) could be a weapon of mass destruction in the wrong hands (it worked in Jason Reitman’s film, but just barely at times).

LOL, Samuel L. Jackson not only thought he had a shot at being in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards,” the actor had the gall to call Quentin up and asked if he’d have to learn French for the role! First off, the character is a French American character that speaks French in the script explicitly, secondly he called him up assuming he was going to get the part?

Mr. T And Bill Hader To Add Voices To ‘Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs’

The beloved children’s book “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” has scored two additions to its voice cast. Apparently Bill Hader and Mr. T have joined the animated adaptation due January 15 2010. We’re honestly unfamiliar with the kids book, but apparently the story follows “a scientist who tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance.” Anna Faris is one of the lead cast members to lend their voice and apparently so is, Andy Samberg.
