Brian Helgeland Shares Details On David Fincher’s Unmade ‘Cleopatra’ Film Almost Starring Angelina Jolie

“Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has a lot of options for what he could make next, and one of them could be his long-gestating “Cleopatra” movie based on the Stacy Schiff novel “Cleopatra: A Life” for Sony Pictures (he has a couple of options, one of them being a third “Dune” movie too).

Before that, however, some may remember the era when filmmaker David Fincher had a version of the movie set up at Paramount, circa 2012, that would have starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie (long before the competing Gal Gadot incarnation with Patty Jenkins and Kari Skogland).

A couple of years ago it was reported that Denis Villeneuve was going to helm a new film about Cleopatra, but it seems that film (if it ever materializes) will have some competition. It was just announced that “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot will reunite for their own version of “Cleopatra,” for Paramount Pictures.

Earlier this fall, it was announced that Denis Villeneuve was in talks to helm “Cleopatra.” The film has essentially been stuck in development hell for years, with David Fincher at one point slated to direct Angelina Jolie in the adaptation of Stacy Schiff‘s “Cleopatra: A Life,” in its most high profile incarnation. It never came together and the project languished.

An opulent, dramatic tale set against the backdrop of the swirling desert during the time of the Roman Empire, it’s easy to see why Hollywood has been obsessed with “Cleopatra.” Joseph L. Mankiewicz nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox making his 1963 movie starring Elizabeth Taylor, but that hasn’t dampened modern ambitions. At one time, Steven Soderbergh was trying to launch a musical version of the story starring Catherine Zeta-Jones but didn’t really get anywhere.

MTV recently took the opportunity to bombard Angelina Jolie with shotgun questions regarding her upcoming slate of projects including Tim Burton’s ‘Maleficent,’ Darren Aronofsky’s “Serena,” an adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Dr. Kay Scarpetta series and an revisioned tale of Egyptian queen Cleopatra. While the actress did go as far confirming her involvement in all four, none sound far enough progressed in development to threaten her short term plans.

Even though Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox due to its troubled production, Hollywood looks eager to bring the sword-and-sandal epic back to the big screen. Of course, we don’t need to mention Steven Soderbergh’s grand, 1920s based, 3-D musical version with a score by Guided By Voices and starring Hugh Jackman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Ray Winstone. That production fell apart once “Moneyball” came in the picture and we don’t need to remind you what happened there, and for now, the picture seems to be on the backburner.

So Steven Soderbergh’s “Moneyball” was all but basically pronounced dead yesterday and we all sadly moved on. Or rather if you want to be specific, it was announced that Soderbergh was officially off the project and if “Moneyball,” were ever to be made, it would be with Sony, Brad Pitt, Steve Zaillian’s draft (or some version by him) and some other director (and presumably that other kid too). No offense to Zaillian, we loved his original draft, but until someone like Soderbergh becomes attached, we’re less interested (and Pitt may have even moved on too, see below).

Back in November, Steve Zaillian (“Gangs Of New York”) had signed on to adapt the baseball novel, “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game,” as a vehicle for Brad Pitt to star in.

Today news comes from Variety that Pitt’s old “Oceans 11, 12 n’ 13” pal Steven Soderbergh is in talks to direct. Soderbergh is apparently only in early discussions because he evidently doesn’t have enough projects on his plate between the two movies coming out this year — the lo-fi, “The Girlfriend Experience,” the Matt Damon black comedy, “The Infomant” for WB — the Cleopatra rock musical, “Cleo,” the “Liberace” biopic and probably four other projects we’re forgetting.

According to Variety, Hugh Jackman has backed out the role of Marc Antony in Steven Soderbergh’s head-scratchingly intriguing 3D rock musical “Cleo” due to scheduling conflicts. The picture is still in the financing stages of pre-production and will reportedly cost $30 million.

Ray Winstone (“Sexy Beast”) is rumored to be in talks to portray Julius Caesar and Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Traffic”) is set to star as the titular character, marking her biggest role since god knows when.

Steven Soderbergh seems to be picking up projects as frequently as anyone not named David Fincher, and with all the activity comes inevitable rumors. A few months ago there was buzz about Soderbergh working on a Cleopatra script, with Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard writing music . In the midst of speculation about a Liberace film with Michael Douglas, and even an adaptation of “A Confederacy of Dunces”, Soderbergh completed his 4 hour “Che” epic, went in to production on “The Informant” and finished “The Girlfriend Experience” script.
