While it’s more than 20 years later, “City Of God: The Fight Rages On” is a spin-off series based on the Oscar-nominated “City Of God” crime thriller which launched the career of Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles (though it was also co-directed by Kátia Lund).

If you go and see “Baby Driver” this weekend expecting another gag-heavy comedy in the vein of Edgar Wright’s earlier films, you’ll likely be in a shock. The absolutely tremendous car-chase-musical (read our review) is funny, sure, but that’s not its primary aim: in a big departure from Wright, it has more in common with classic 70s crime cinema than with, “Hot Fuzz” (for example) using the director’s formal gifts in service of a surprisingly hard-boiled heist movie.

Crime stories have a long and celebrated lineage in film. Like horror, it’s a fun, but often disappointing genre. You have to wade through a lot of shit to get to the gold. But when they’re good, they’re really good. Great modern gangster films – the past decade has seen some bona fide new classics with “The Pusher Trilogy,” “City of God,” “Gomorrah,” “A Prophet” and even the recent “Animal Kingdom” – transcend and twist the genre, revitalizing what was once rote.

‘Gomorrah’ Foreign Oscar Snub Outrage Continues

We weren’t gigantic fans of Matteo Garrone’s hyperlinked Italian crime drama “Gomorrah” (though we did like it), but with all the accolades and praise it earned this year (the Grand Prix award at Cannes and an very enthusiastic endorsement from Marty Scorsese), its shortlist snub yesterday from the Oscar Foreign Picture committee cannot be viewed as anything but a major fuck up and oversight on their part.

As we noted yesterday, this is nothing new.

Contest: ‘City Of Men’ Soundtrack & Poster

“City of God,” the 2002 Academy Award-nominated Brazilian film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, turned a lot of heads that year with its stylish and brutal chronicle of the favelas (slums) of Rio De Janeiro and the ruthless gangsters therein.

The film did so well, it launched Meirelles career onto an international stage (he went on to direct “The Constant Gardener”) and begat the celebrated and immensely popular spin-off TV series “City of Men” in Brazil.
