LAS VEGAS – Yes, it’s only April.  Yes, early Oscar or award season takes without seeing the actual movie are often ridiculous and should be avoided like the plague.  And, notably, hot takes often tend to piss people off.  All that considered, the oxygen pumped into the ballroom at Caesars Palace during CinemaCon must be affecting my judgement because I’m going there anyway.  The hype is real.  Timothée Chalamet is looking at another awards season run, but this time for Amazon Studios new drama “Beautiful Boy.”

Based on two novels, “Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction” by David Sheff and his son Nick Sheff’s “Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamine,” the movie follows the relationship between David (Steve Carell) and Nic (Chalamet) as the later deals with meth addiction in his early 20’s.

LAS VEGAS –  The CinemaCon presentation for 20th Century Fox got off to a rousing start on Thursday morning.  An intricate musical number to the song “One” from “A Chorus Line” featured dancers in red and black costumes as the “Deadpool” logo slowly came into view overhead.  There was a male dancer with a Deadpool mask on (or one similar to it), but it wasn’t star Ryan Reynolds.

It’s been widely speculated that “Overlord,” a new film directed by Julius Avery, would be yet another secret “Cloverfield” sequel, a la “10 Cloverfield Lane” and “The Cloverfield Paradox.” The film, which J.J. Abrams (the “Cloverfield” mastermind) described as a “crazy movie” previously, follows Allied soldiers in World War II, who are trapped behind enemy lines and find out that the Nazis have been using something paranormal to aide in the fight.

At CinemaCon (which we’ve been covering all week), we’ve gotten sneak peeks at tons of upcoming films from the major studios. One of those studios is Paramount, who recently saw its film “A Quiet Place” shock the world with its box office dominance. As we said a couple weeks ago, “A Quiet Place” is a much-needed hit for the struggling studio, and so it’s no surprise that a sequel is in the works.

LAS VEGAS — Focus Features had a lot to celebrate in 2017.  “Atomic Blonde” was a summer hit, “Victoria and Abdul” showed Judi Dench can still be a box office superstar with the right movie, “The Beguiled” was pretty close to profitable (a rarity for a Sofia Coppola film), “Darkest Hour” earned $147 million globally and “Phantom Thread” was a surprise Best Picture nominee.

LAS VEGAS — If this journalist could get a dollar for every time a director said they wanted to make a movie that harkened back to the Amblin movies of the ’80s I’d have a nice chunk of change to invest in bitcoin (or maybe enough to cover Chipotle for a month). It’s a talking point that’s so common it’s hard to avoid snickering when a filmmaker says it. So, there was some trepidation at CinemaCon on Wednesday with Travis Knight said that was his goal with the first real “Transformers” spin-off, a Bumblebee solo flick appropriately titled, “Bumblebee.”  Based on the footage shown, however, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker might have just pulled it off.

No, we’re not suggesting that because of his “religious” choice or his infamous couch-jumping skills, but because of the insane stunts he continues to do in one film after another.  Among his more recent exploits, he hung onto a plane that went airborne for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and last summer delayed the release of the next “Mission” movie, “Fallout,” after breaking his ankle while jumping onto a roof.

LAS VEGAS –  Universal Pictures has quite a year in front of them.  There’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” Illumination’s “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” “Night School” with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish (can they host the Oscars together?), Dreamworks’ “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” Eli Roth‘s kid friendly “The House With A Clock In Its Walls,” Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper,” an untitled Robert Zemeckis drama and the Peter Jackson produced “Mortal Engines.”   The two films that really blew away the crowd of theater owners and operators at CinemaCon, however, were David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” and M.

LAS VEGAS – Universal Studios put on quite a presentation for the world’s theater owners and operators on Wednesday.  They showed footage from the new “Halloween,” M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” and even ended the presentation with a surprise performance from the legendary Cher singing “Fernando” live from “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” (some of us may still be recovering from that).  What was most intriguing, however, was Damien Chazelle, Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy appearing on stage to show the first footage from “First Man.

LAS VEGAS –  When James Wan told the audience at CinemaCon that Warner Bros. made him show a sneak peek at his highly anticipated next effort, “Aquaman,” it prompted a light-hearted laugh from the crowd.  But if you were paying close enough attention it was clear Wan wasn’t really kidding.  And after watching the somewhat impressive preview you understood why.  It truly was a work in progress.

The most polished scenes were the ones that featured our hero, Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) aka Aquaman, on land or above sea (basically out of the water).

LAS VEGAS – If you haven’t heard half of Hollywood has already seen Bradley Cooper’s “A Star is Born.”  In fact, it seems like a week doesn’t go by where another prominent name drops that Cooper screened the movie for them and it’s fantastic (the most recent being Robert DeNiro).  At CinemaCon today Cooper joined his ex-roommate and Warner Bros. surprise host Will Arnett on stage to talk about the movie and screen the first trailer for what will be his directorial debut.

LAS VEGAS – You never quite know what Walt Disney Studios is going to present at the annual CinemaCon convention.  Sometimes the studio known for its popular brands will screen an entire movie two months before its release (“Inside Out” in 2015).  Other times their presence will be limited to a short presentation focusing on their upcoming slate with with familiar trailers and no new footage provided.   Disney still doesn’t partake in the stars on parade strategy that Warner Bros.
