If you’re trapped in the hellscape that is Winter 2018, surrounded by piles of snow and frigid temperatures, the last thing you want to curl up to is a series set in the arctic. Unless that series is “The Terror,” which will give you the cold comfort that things could actually be worse.

The AMC show, produced by Ridley Scott, and featuring  Jared Harris and Ciarin Hinds among the ensemble, tells the “true story” of the Royal Navy’s perilous journey through the Northwest Passage.

There is a moment in “Justice League” when one of the assembled heroes exclaims “Booyah!” to celebrate the satisfactory conclusion of a particularly gruelling action sequence. Until that point, the film simply runs numbingly on the low end of the DC Films bell curve — not as offensively awful as “Suicide Squad,” but not quite reaching the functional incompetence of “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” — but the utterance of the sassy, outdated, nearly anachronistic zinger suddenly crystalizes just how desperate “Justice League” is to please.

A few times each year, students and teachers take a break from each other by filling class time with a movie. The curriculum of films rarely gets updated, but educators may want to consider “Woman Walks Ahead.” It’s the kind of smoothly rounded, edgeless historical drama that’s built for maximum appeal, with a broad perspective and an easy to digest tone. Well-crafted and ably told, this is a film that’s wholly respectable though not particularly memorable, but still manages to connect with its earnest good intentions and desire to please.

“Silence” opens in mist, and that pervasive haziness quickly comes to serve as a visual metaphor for the unresolvable spiritual crisis at the heart of Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel, which was previously brought to the screen – in even more austere form – by Japanese filmmaker Masahiro Shinoda in 1971. A passion project the Catholic director has sought to make for the better part of three decades, Scorsese’s religious epic is consumed with the question of God’s muteness in the face of hardship – and, considering that lack of feedback, how man can truly know whether he or she is acting in accordance with His will.
