As odd as that might sound, that’s exactly what a woman needs in the new film, “The Starling.”

As seen in the trailer for “The Starling,” the film stars Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd as a couple dealing with a tragedy. While O’Dowd’s character finds himself under the supervision of medical health professionals at a local hospital, McCarthy’s character finds solace speaking to a veterinarian, who helps her figure out her grief and move forward with her life.

As was explained by one of the platform’s executives, the delay in production due to the global pandemic means that the latter half of 2020 could be without major Netflix Originals. So, it’s obvious why Netflix is willing to spend top dollar to land a high-profile film, such as “The Starling.”

Co-written and directed by Russell Harbaugh, and starring Chris O’Dowd, Andie MacDowell, James Adomian, Juliet Rylance, Dree Hemingway, and Gareth Williams, the story follows a family that starts falling apart when the husband and father of the clan passes away.

Within the opening minutes of the latest addition to the franchise, we’re told everything we need to know: with Earth facing a massive energy crisis, Hamilton (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), with the encouragement of her husband Michael (Roger Davies), puts aside the pain of a personal tragedy, to embark on a last ditch effort to save all life on Earth.

Even if his chops behind the camera still need some work, the dialogue is exactly what you’d expect. It’s no “The Social Network” or even “Steve Jobs” (which was pretty underrated, if you ask me) but it does feature Jessica Chastain gamely chewing into the screenplay while wearing some outrageously beautiful/trashy attire.

The household names tend to be actors and directors, in that order. For years, Aaron Sorkin has been one of the exceptions that prove the rule. He has penned incredible television, from “The West Wing” to “The Newsroom,” and he has penned incredible films, from “A Few Good Men” to “The Social Network.” Come this November, however, Sorkin will no longer be an exception to the rule because he is (finally!) making his directorial debut with STX Entertainment’s “Molly’s Game.”

While Sorkin is jumping behind the camera for the first time, it doesn’t mean he’s left his old gig in the rearview, as he’s still the credited screenwriter for “Molly’s Game.” The drama is based on the memoir of Molly Bloom, the young woman who orchestrated one of the highest stakes poker games ever.

It’s hard to imagine the oeuvre of Sacha Baron Cohen or shows like both the U.K. and U.S. versions of “The Office,” “Parks & Recreation,” and “Modern Family” without Guest laying the groundwork.

Such, alas, continues to be the case with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” a by-the-books YA affair that resembles “X-Men: First Class” retrofitted for the tween Hot Topic set.
