While the festival season has really only just begun—Telluride is over, we’re in the middle of Venice, and the Toronto International Film Festival just beginning—there are plenty of films being released in September that have already earned some well-deserved buzz or promise to entice audiences based on the trailers alone. And with all due respect to titles like “Blinded by the Light,” “The Farewell,” and “Ready or Not,” things are certainly looking up from the rather abysmal last two months.

It’s been nearly ten years since his last movie, the Islamic terrorism satire “Four Lions,” and now, filmmaker Chris Morris is finally back with his long-belated follow up. Titled “The Day Shall Come,” the movie, which made its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, is pitched very much in the same political/satirical vein as his previous film. However, this time, the film, while still laceratingly funny, has a darker tone ultimately, and looks to examine the way law enforcement in the U.S.

The opening title card of British comedian, director, and provocateur Chris Morris’ long-awaited follow-up to “Four Lions” reads “Based on 100 True Stories.” Morris’ targets and topics in “The Day Shall Come“— such as radicalism, racial profiling, law enforcement manipulation and entrapment, gentrification, exploitation of disenfranchised communities, etc.— often feels like 100 stories crammed into one. But what keeps the film mostly on track is its proudly confrontational nature, quick-witted dialogue, and performances to match.

It’s hard to believe nearly eight years have passed since Chris Morris dropped his debut film, “Four Lions.” The searing comedy earned an armload of awards and nominations, and while he seemed poised for big things, we didn’t hear anything from Morris. While he dipped into American television with four episodes of “Veep,” it didn’t seem like the filmmaker had anything on the boil. We were wrong.
