In any case, the Band-Aid of civility has been ripped from our flesh, the fissures and wounds of our great American experiment now exposed for what they are: bruised ideals, a great many of which are built on fallacies.

We decided, ultimately, to not write about the excellent Criterion 3-disc DVD for Steven Soderbergh’s “Che.” It’s territory we thoroughly covered on this blog when the film was at film festivals and then in theaters (and as if we don’t say enough about what’shisface as it is).

Rope of Silicon, for example, did a commendable job transcribing Soderbergh quotes from the DVD, but these were all things he said in the press before (i.e., “I want to retire,” “Does cinema matter?” It seemed he was delivered a big emotional blow by his perceived failure of the film — how it was downloaded, neglected, etc.).

It’s Friday, so there’s nothing like discussing porn…and early retirement. Yes, Steven Soderbergh still insists he’s getting out of the game and soon. Don’t like it? Tough, he basically says he’s done enough in his lifetime, which is true considering his prodigious output. Soderbergh says he’ll retire in less than four years.

Does that mean, “Knockout,” “Liberace,” “Cleo,” the 2nd Spalding Gray doc, maybe another lo-fi Magnet film, and one more maybe if we’re lucky?

Criterion announced their January slate this afternoon, and if its any indication of what 2010 has in store, we’re all in for a massive treat and it should quiet the cinephiles stacking their spine numbers who’ve been complaining of late of the company’s supposed contemporary slant to their releases.

First up is the company’s long-awaited DVD and BluRay release of “Che”, which if anything, should please Jeffrey Wells. As Peter Becker promised, the release has been worth the wait as the 3-disc DVD or 2-disc BluRay is completely stacked with extras.

Wondering what happened to that Criterion edition DVD of Steven Soderbergh’s two-part epic, “Che“? You’re not the only one. Originally it was announced for the fall and then as each month of autumn was announced and passed, it was basically unofficially said to be arriving that following month.

Well Criterion announced their line-up for December (which amounted to October and November titles being pushed into December) and the end of the year so what gives?

The “Moneyball” fiasco was one of the uglier movie dramas of the year. To recap: Steven Soderbergh was supposed to direct the baseball statistic drama, but Sony’s Amy Pascal pulled the plug a mere three days before shooting because of budget and script issues. Evidently the studio didn’t care for Soderbergh’s rewrite, but whatever the case was, the prolific director was thrown under the bus and became the fall guy.

When you get such a raw deal and become a scapegoat, it’s probably best to stay quiet and let the media maelstrom pass and get over itself and Soderbergh basically did just that.

The last of our Melbourne Film Festival Reports…

Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist”
If “Bronson” shocked us, then “Antichrist” can only be described as a straight up assault. We’re still trying piece it all together. The film is split into four chapters, beginning with a phenomenal slow-motion prologue that details the tragic death of the son of our protagonists, (played by William Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg). The first chapter features fascinating dichotomous therapist-patient, husband-wife exchanges between Dafoe and Gainsbourg, but in Chapter 2, things take a turn and by the time the film explores the idea of ‘The Three Beggars,’ we were already totally out of it.

These days, it seems Steven Soderbergh is in the news for everything except making movies.

Of course, there was the ugly and widely publicized cancellation of “Moneyball”, and now in the “In My Opinion” column in the latest issue of DGA Quarterly, Soderbergh has written a very candid, funny and scathing piece on HD channels that butcher widescreen films.

Non-aspect ratio nerds take note, this might be Greek. In particular, he speaks about films in 2.40:1 that are blown up or chopped to fit the 16:9 ratio of current television sets.

See what you fuckers in the press have done? You’ve dispirited the shit out of Steven Soderbergh with all this “Moneyball” stuff.

His two-part epic “Che” is available on DVD and Blu-ray now in the U.K. so presumably this is the reason why he’s doing press across the pond.

But don’t look for answers about “Moneyball,” either the U.K. press is not asking or he’s simply not talking.

This conversation is strictly about “Che” and the man sounds defeated and rather depressed at the mixed response he got from the film and the adventurous way they presented the film with the road show of two parts.

In today’s Criterion email newsletter, the customary “clue” at the bottom of the page seems to be a bit more obvious this month and seems to indicate that they will soon be issuing a deluxe edition of Steven Soderbergh’s massive, two-part “Che.”

Rather esoteric initially, the clues in these newsletters have been getting more explicit in recent months (what else could a mechanical scarab be, besides Guillermo del Toro’s “Cronos”?), and this picture of a parrot with a Che T-shirt on and the caption, “This fall, Criterion welcomes you to the jungle,” seems to directly point to “Che” (see image below).

Last we heard about Stephen Soderbergh’s “Che” the epic two-part film had moved to IFC’s Video OnDemand for the entire nation to potentially watch, but it’s been quiet out there and IFC have still yet to qualify the results of its VOD numbers, which frankly suggests they’re nothing to write home about or send out a press release about which is a shame.

We’ve championed “Che” a lot here mostly because it’s one of our favorite films of 2008 and lots of readers in smaller cities would always write in bemoaning the fact that they lived in megaplex nowheresville and would probably never get a chance to see it.

David Carr started the “If I Ran The Academy” meme listing 1o things you would change in this year’s Oscars if you had magical powers and then Jeff Wells joined in. So the 10 things we would change if We Ran The Academy would go something like this:

1. “Che” would be a Best Picture nominee.
2. Kristin Scott Thomas would have secured herself a Best Actress nod for “I’ve Loved You So Long” and been the frontrunner.

Well, starting Friday January 23, you can do the roadshow experience in your home if you like as both films will be available on IFC Video On Demand (if you have something above basic cable this should be available to you).

So yeah, conceivably, if you have the stamina, you two can see the whole ambitious enterprise in one sitting only with convenient pause bathroom breaks, a plethora of snacks and in your underwear if you so choose.

Apparently this is a U.K. poster for “Che” Part Two, subtitled “Guerilla.” Is it just us or are they really pimping out part two or is it just the original posters were supposed to stand for Part One? A little confused, but whatever, this one is beautiful and the first poster for the Steven Soderbergh directed film that we’ve actually really liked. The Roadshow version is over done in L.A. and New York (though moving onto nine other cities), but is moving into two version release now for those that don’t want to sit in a theater for around five hours.

Is this a new IFC poster for Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” Part Two (“The Guerilla”) specifically? Looks that way, huh? We weren’t aware that they were making posters, but we nabbed this off of IFC’s Facebook page.

We wonder if they’ll be a poster for “The Argentine.” All we know is we want one and we certainly want a “Che” DVD when it eventually comes out too. We hope that’s loaded with extras and any scenes that were cut from the film.

Seeing both Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” films in one four 1/2 hour sitting used to be the exclusive privilege of us assholes living in New York and L.A.

Fear not, those of you living in smaller markets, the “Che” Roadshow release/ experiment that IFC has put on has done so well in NY and L.A., (it was even extended beyond the original one-week plan in mid December), that is is now moving to markets in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, DC starting on next Friday, January 16.

Maybe our feeling will change, but right now, we’re not really feeling very excited for the Oscars or the nominations. Dunno, maybe it’s because we feel this year like an abundant amount of deserving films are going to get honored and awarded and it just feels too… locked in and predictable.

At the same time, if we had to lay money down on the technical sub-categories right now, we’d probably lose our shirts.

Actors are funny people. This exchange between “Che”s Benicio del Toro and Vulture was printed today.

There’s been some criticism about your accent in the movie. You speak in a Caribbean Spanish accent while Che Guevara had an Argentine one. Was there a reason you made that choice?
Where’d you read that? It was mentioned in the Variety review, among other places.
What do they know?
