Criterion November/December Releases: ‘Night Of The Hunter,’ Chaplin’s ‘Modern Times’ & Amazing Seven-Disc BBS Box set (‘Easy Rider’ & More)

It’s mid-month and like clockwork, the Criterion Collection has unveiled its November release schedule — another slate of classics the tastemaking company can be proud of.

The first release is one we didn’t see coming. When we spoke to Criterion’s Jon Mulvaney last year, he did tell us about a twelve-picture deal with IFC Films, but at the time, Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” was not expected to be among the releases. That’s obviously changed and the psychological, cabin-in-the-woods horror starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe hits DVD release on November 9.

Lost John Ford Film Uncovered Among 75 Films Found In New Zealand Archive; Lost Charlie Chaplin Film ‘A Thief Catcher’ To Screen Next Month

It’s a great time to be a classic film fan. Following the recent discovery of the long thought to be lost scenes from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” in an Argentinian film archive in 2008, 75 films long presumed to be gone forever have been found in a New Zealand film archive storage vault, and a Charlie Chaplin film has been turned up by film preservationist Paul E. Gierucki.

Leading the pack of films found in New Zealand is a silent by legendary director John Ford.

At the end of our interview with the Criterion Collection’s Jonathan Turell, he put us in touch with Jon Mulvaney, Criterion’s inside man on what the future has in store and he revealed to us exclusively, a number of Criterion titles that should be out in the near future and next year.

“The French Lieutenant’s Woman” – Another selection from MGM’s catalog, you can expect this from Criterion next year. Starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, this film of parallel narratives contains a film-within-a-film and was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Daniel Brühl Says ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Is A Comedy?

OK, we knew we read it somewhere. This frightens us, honestly (though it was referenced in a recent conversation we had too).

“I’m curious to see how it’s going to be received in Germany,” Daniel Brühl, told the New York Times about “Inglourious Basterds” placing the movie in the tradition of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1942 war comedy, “To Be or Not To Be” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Great Dictator.” “If a comedy is intelligent and has depth, it’s a very legitimate way to talk about Fascism in Nazi Germany, which was also a big show — and if you think about it, very ridiculous.”

Sure, all Quentin Tarantino movies have comedic elements to them — and he is talking about the idea of treating fascism with a sense of humor in film — but the campier and goofier his films get, the more it worries those already worried about what we’ve seen in the trailer especially what appears to be Brad Pitt’s overacting/ overdoing it on the accent.
