With “Demonic” getting released recently, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has been making the publicity rounds talking about his new thriller. And you can’t really talk to Blomkamp about filmmaking without talking about one of the biggest films that he was attached to that famously fell apart— “Alien 5.” And according to a new interview with The Guardian, Blomkamp posits a theory that the not-so-great reception “Chappie” received when it was released led to Ridley Scott pulling the plug on his ‘Alien’ sequel.

The Deep Focus podcast is back, and this week, we have filmmaker Neill Blomkamp,  known for “District 9,” “Elysium,” and blending sci-fi with socio-political commentary and envelope-pushing technology. Blomkamp’s latest film, “Demonic,” does all that with a little bit of a twist. It’s his first supernatural horror film that takes him outside of his comfort zone of sci-fi, and it’s seemingly less heavy on the socio-political observation.

When “Chappie” arrived in cinemas two years ago, it was yet another bold, wholly original vision from the endlessly creative Neill Blomkamp, and for whatever reason, critics and audiences just couldn’t wrap their minds around it. Reviews were mostly negative, and the box office performance was poor ($102 million worldwide, most of that overseas; the film only did $31 million domestic). It’s a shame because “Chappie” is loads of fun, surprisingly moving, and features one of the most bonkers scores of Hans Zimmer‘s career (he’s never really made anything quite like it).

Ever since releasing “District 9,” Neill Blomkamp has been somewhat banged up by critics and fans. The social issues sci-fi “Elysium” wasn’t particularly well-received, and when he returned two years later with “Chappie,” the film was laughed off by many who couldn’t get on the same wavelength as the high concept movie about a sentient robot who is misunderstood and manipulated by humans, and longs for connection.
