Magnolia Picks Up U.S. Rights To ‘Ceremony’ Starring Uma Thurman & Michael Angarano

Magnolia Pictures has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Max Winkler’s directorial debut, “Ceremony,” starring Michael Angarano and Uma Thurman.

Executive produced by Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air”), the picture made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, essentially a comedy about a young man (Angarano) who looks to crash the wedding of an older woman with whom he’s infatuated (Thurman), much to the chagrin of his unwilling best friend (Reece Thompson).

TIFF ’10 Review: ‘Ceremony’ Is Charming & Well-Made, Despite Wes Anderson Derivativeness

Employing similar symmetrical framing and tracking shots, classic rock soundtrack flourishes and quirky, fanciful characters, Max Winkler’s directorial debut, “Ceremony” feels heavily indebted to the early works of Wes Anderson. Arguably a derivative effort in that sense, the film is still not without its delightful little charms, and despite the obvious familiarities, is still entertaining and engaging.

Michael Angarano stars as Sam, a young and struggling unpublished children’s book author filled with an inflated self-confidence, not unlike a certain Rushmore Academy overachieving dreamer you may be acquainted with.

The upcoming wedding dramedy, “Ceremony” starring Uma Thurman, Lee Pace (“Pushing Daisies”), Michael Angarano, Reece Thompson and Jake M. Johnson (“Paper Heart”) will boast a score by Fruitbats singer/songwriter and occasional Shins member Eric D. Johnson.
The film — full synopsis here — will evidently boast many musical riches, as sources close to the project tell us that legendary Beach Boys arranger/collaborator Van Dyke Parks has written additional music for the film as well.

First Look: Uma Thurman & Michael Angarano In ‘Ceremony’

A film we wrote plenty about last year was “Ceremony” starring Michael Angarano (“Snow Angels”) and Uma Thurman. A romantic dramedy, the picture centers on a young man (Angarano) who falls in love with an older woman (Thurman) and attempts to break up her wedding at a beach town with the help of his best friend (Reece Thompson). The picture also co-stars Lee Pace (“Pushing Daisies”) as Thurman’s fiance and Jake Johnson (“Paper Heart”). Thanks to the TIFF site now we have a first look image and a long synopsis:

A perpetual adolescent stumbling through his twenties with inflated self-confidence, Sam (Michael Angarano) clings to the naive notions of love and romance that he immortalizes in a series of unpublished children’s books.

The ‘Ceremony’ Switcheroos: Jesse Eisenberg Leaves For ‘Facebook’ Film; All In A Days Filmmaking

Alright, something we missed that we needed to clear up. Maybe more for ourselves than our readers as we’re sticklers for detail, but who knows, maybe some will appreciate.

When the trades announced that Uma Thurman had joined the cast of “Ceremony,” the feature-film directorial debut of Max Winkler, they reported that Michael Angarano was set to play the lead.

However, they made no mention of the fact that Jesse Eisenberg was originally set to play the lead — it’s a romantic dark comedy about a young man who becomes obsessed with an older woman and then attempts to break up her wedding at a beach town — and Angarano was supposed to play the unwitting friend who joins along in the ill-conceived endeavor.

Uma Thurman Joins The’ Ceremony’

Uma Thurman has joined the cast of “Ceremony,” a project we’ve been keeping an eye on because it has not only an interesting cast, but some up-and-coming filmmakers behind it.

The film is the directorial debut of Max Winkler (son of Henry Winkler) and Winkler helped write another project with up-and-coming talent: the upcoming Jonah Hill comedy “The Adventurer’s Handbook” directed by Akiva Schaffer (known for his SNL Lonely Island skits) — which stars Jason Schwartzman and Hill — and produced and directed episodes of the excellent web series “Clark and Michael” that starred Clark Duke and Michael Cera which we adored (if you’ve never seen, go run now).

Yesterday, in brief, we mentioned the new project, called, “Ceremony,” (formerly titled “The Wedding”) a comedy which will mark the directorial debut of Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler (you know, the Fonz). The film is going to star Michael Angarano (“Snow Angels”) and Jesse Eisenberg (“Adventureland,” “The Squid & The Whale”) and centers on a young man (Eisenberg) who falls in love with an older woman and, along with an unwitting friend (Angarano), attempts to break up her wedding at a beach town.
