Well, this certainly is a shame.

“Cemetery Junction,” the first directorial feature film effort by the usually fantastic duo of Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, has been denied a US theater release and will go straight to DVD come August 17th thanks (or no thanks) to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. It’s hard to believe that the force behind hugely popular television shows “The Office” and “Extras” wouldn’t find even a limited release, especially when extremely small films such as “Cropsey” and “Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean” (never heard of them?

Review: ‘Cemetery Junction’ Is A Half-Realized Coming-Of-Age Tale

The road to the big screen for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the creators of the original BBC version of “The Office,” hasn’t exactly been littered with roses so far. Gervais pulled his usual shtick in some half-baked cameos in the likes of “For Your Consideration,” “Night at the Museum” and “Stardust,” graduated to starring roles with the pleasant, but curiously joke-free “Ghost Town,” and made his directorial debut last year, alongside Matt Robinson, with “The Invention of Lying.” The latter’s a particularly interesting case — a very, very good script being totally and utterly botched in the execution, resulting in a nearly unwatchable final product.

“Cemetery Junction” writer-director Ricky Gervais has taken to the Guardian to discuss the music in his upcoming coming-of-age tale which, according to Gervais himself, centers on “the most fundamental things in the making of a man: family, economics, the time and place you happened to be plonked in.”

As a once aspiring pop star himself, Gervais is an avid music fan — he passionately controlled the playlist for his long running, über popular radio show with ‘Junction’ co-writer, co-director Stephen Merchant — and added that “even though the movie is a [work of] fiction, the values, themes and characters are based on my memory of growing up in Reading in the early 70’s.

A David Bowie-Mott The Hoople-backed trailer for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s “Cemetery Junction” has leaked online and, as promised, exhibits a more dramatic turn from the duo behind “The Office” and “Extras.”

Starring the relatively unknown quartet of Christian Cooke, Tom Hughes, Jack Doolan and Felicity Jones, the coming-of-age tale centers on three blue-collar friends in 1970’s England as they bide their time joking, drinking, fighting, chasing girls and the sexual revolution they’ve heard so much about.

A whole host of details on Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s “Cemetery Junction” have been unveiled courtesy of Gervais’ own blog.

The film centers on three blue-collar friends in 1970’s London as they bide their time “joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls” and has three unknowns as the leads – from left to right in the photo Jack Doolan, Christian Cooke and Tom Hughes.

Big names Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson, meanwhile, will play Mr.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s “Cemetery Junction” has finalized its cast and commenced production in London as of this week, according to a press release.

Described as a “funny, touching and universal story of being trapped in a small town and dreaming of escape,” the film will follow three blue-collar friends in 1970’s London as they bide their time “joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls.”

The trio of mates, who are seen here in their costume and make up test, will be played by newcomers (from left to right) Christian Cooke, Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan.

Recognize any of these mugs? Don’t worry, you’re not suppose to. These three (relatively) unknown actors have been cast as the male leads in Ricky Gervais’ “Cemetery Junction,” according to Empire.

The trio, from left to right, are Christian Cooke, Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan and will play the group of young 20-something year olds who lead the story of ‘Junction,’ previously known as “Men At The Pru.” They join the previously announced Gervais and Felicity Jones as well as Ralph Fiennes who is now confirmed to be on board.

Up-and-coming British actress Felicity Jones has scored the female lead in the upcoming Ricky Gervais project “Cemetery Junction.” Jones will play a character named Julie who holds aspirations in photography but is led by her male counterparts to believe women should be mothers and wives. Formerly known as “Men At The Pru,” the project also has Ralph Fiennes in talks for a role while Gervais himself is also set for an acting gig. [THR]

Apatow stalwarts Leslie Mann and Elizabeth Banks are set to combine forces in “What Was I Thinking?” The story will follow the two leads on a hedonistic ski trip after one gets dumped by a boyfriend.
