But as far as acclaimed directors from that country go, you should probably add Carlos Reygadas to that list. Though not as famous as the aforementioned Amigos, Reygadas has garnered worldwide acclaim, with his latest film “Our Time” touring the film festival circuit last year.

Of the six films debuting in the Collection in March 2019, some of the highlights include the incredible ‘70s film from filmmaker Barbara Loden, titled “Wanda,” Edgar G.

While his films are festival hits and have garnered the Mexican director critical acclaim, Reygada’s work is known for having a bit of a learning curve for viewers. However, once you understand how the filmmaker works, you’ll probably understand why many people consider his films masterpieces. And judging by the first trailer for his latest film, “Nuestro Tiempo (Our Time),” it doesn’t look like Reygada has changed much in the last six years.

He’s staked his name on audacious, challenging works like “Silent Night,” “Battle In Heaven,” and his most recent, “Post Tenebras Lux.” But that film was released four years ago, and other than helming a short, it’s been quiet from Reygadas’ corner.

Mexican director Carlos Reygadas’ 2007 film “Silent Light” pretty much blew us away and we’ve been anxiously awaiting the director’s next project. Well, as Bomb magazine reveals, it appears he has a short film and feature length project already in the can.

The full length film, “Serenghetti” (pictured above and below), was specially commissioned by International Film Festival Rotterdam. The festival contacted the director to make a film for their Urban Screens program and the result was a docu-drama of sorts of a soccer match between two women’s amateur teams.

Fear not, as they plan to fill this hole with some ambitious spunk, thanks to their DC hero library.

At ShoWest, which is a film business gathering — not a flashers’ convention — WB head Alan Horn confirmed that they would fill the annual slot in their tentpole schedule sans “Potter” with a flood of superhero pictures.

We weren’t gigantic fans of Matteo Garrone’s hyperlinked Italian crime drama “Gomorrah” (though we did like it), but with all the accolades and praise it earned this year (the Grand Prix award at Cannes and an very enthusiastic endorsement from Marty Scorsese), its shortlist snub yesterday from the Oscar Foreign Picture committee cannot be viewed as anything but a major fuck up and oversight on their part.

As we noted yesterday, this is nothing new.

“Silent Light” is an stunning piece of work, seriously. It’s breathtaking. It reminds us of Terrence Malick’s graceful work in “Days of Heaven.” Years from now we’re going to look back and kick ourselves for not putting it higher on our (my) Top 2008 list (even New York critics screened it in the third week of December so in the interest of fairness and not top-loading our picks with recent, year-end picks, we only put it as low or high, as we could).

In case you thought we were high or even exaggerating.

“I was amazed by SILENT LIGHT – the setting, the language, the delicacy of the interactions between the people on screen, the drama of redemption. And most of all by Carlos Reygadas’s extraordinarily rich sense of cinema, evident in every frame. A surprising picture, and a very moving one as well.” – Martin Scorsese

It’s not an English language trailer, but it’ll suffice.

Ok, we don’t really have that much time at the moment, but we just wanted to say Carlos Reygadas’ “Silent Light” was drop-dead stunning, and one of the most incredible moving and accomplished films we’ve seen all year.

It premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and is just now getting a release in North America. It’s U.S. release begins in New York the first week in January. We’ve been clocking the film all year, noting when it’s received acclaim and noted that it’s Mexico’s official selection for the 2008 Foreign Oscar category (despite being spoken almost entirely in Plautdietsch, a dialect of Russian Mennonites).
