Pierre Choderolas de Laclos’ 1782 epistolary novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” has proven to be incredibly malleable over the last few decades. In addition to the 1988, Stephen Frears-directed Christopher Hampton adapted “Dangerous Liaisons,” we’ve gotten the stately “Valmont” and even the glorious camp of “Cruel Intentions.” Needless to say, the world was perhaps not clamoring for another look into the backstabbing lives of the Marquise de Merteuil and her sometimes lover/enemy, Valmont.

While traveling isn’t an option right now, let the dark and moody trailer for “Lost Girls & Love Hotels” transport you to Japan. The film, based on Catherine Hanrahan’s 2006 book of the same name, follows an American English teacher named Margaret, played by Alexandra Daddario (“True Detective”), in Tokyo. She explores Tokyo nightlife on a daily basis and falls into the arms of a man named Kazu, played by Takehiro Hira (“The Fighter Pilot”) as she attempts to forget her painful past.

It’s always good practice to be your own biggest cheerleader. Whether it’s in your job or just life, in general, you should always be proud of your accomplishments and not be afraid to put yourself out there for recognition. Apparently, that’s sometimes exactly what you have to do to get an Emmy nomination, as well. At least for some of the cast of “Game of Thrones,” that is.

According to THR, three castmembers of the massive HBO series “Game of Thrones” self-submitted for Emmy consideration after HBO didn’t submit.

“I had a lot of problems in financing [the film]. I never experienced such a horrible movie set. A large part of our team has not even been paid yet by the Danish producers. The film is finished and ready to go out, but I have no idea what its future will hold, it is currently in the hands of the producers. This was my first experience in Denmark and most likely my last.” These are the words of director Brian De Palma, nearly a full year before this week’s release of “Domino.” There are few directors that cinephiles are aching to return to form more than Brian De Palma, but unfortunately, his string of misfires continues with this picture.

The process of bringing “Domino” to the theaters has been difficult and well-documented. While the film has seemingly sat on the shelf for a while, with filmmaker Brian De Palma sharing some harsh words about the working conditions, the upcoming terrorist thriller is finally arriving on the big screen later this month. And no matter what, more De Palma is always a good thing.

The awards season can you leave you feeling in the mood for something with a bit of dirt under the fingernails, and “Brimstone” may be what you’re looking for. Arriving in cinemas shortly after the Oscars, it’s a gritty Western with some great names involved, and looking like it boasts plenty of style, too.

It feels like a new invention for these socially aware times, but the feminist western has a pedigree that stretches back beyond that thrilling moment in the mid-’90s when cornerstone subgenre masterpieces “Bad Girls” and “The Quick and the Dead” were released within a year of each other. (Yes, I’m joking about the description of either of those two titles as a masterpiece.) In many ways the western form, though indelibly associated with the saddle-weary low-slung machismo of the John Wayne/John Ford collaborations, has always lent itself to strong female roles, whether it’s Joan Crawford in Nicholas Ray‘s “Johnny Guitar,” Barbara Stanwyck in Anthony Mann‘s “The Furies” (which actually is a masterpiece) or Anne Bancroft in Ford’s own swan song “7 Women.”

But what’s notable about all of those films, and many of the more recent titles that fit the profile, is that a great deal of their internal tension and drama comes from their female characters trying to find a way for their strength to co-exist with their femininity in an environment where gender binaries are iron-clad, and women aren’t real women unless they’re weak.
